LTE B41a RRH8x20 (UZHD) Technical Description Product Overview
Component Function
Digital Does processing of the I/Q stream to and from the RRH.
Processing
Transmit Path Provides modulation, RF gain, and bandpass filtering for downlink signals.
(Note that for clarity in the diagram the transmit and receive path boxes do
not extend to include the bandpass filter, but the filter is considered a part of
these RF paths).
For B41a RRH8x20, eight transmit paths of 60MHz instantaneous bandwidth
and up to 20W per path are supported.
Receive Path Provides bandpass filtering, low noise amplification, and demodulation of the
uplink signals.
For B41a RRH8x20, provides eight receive paths of 60MHz instantaneous
bandwidth.
CPRI Unit All RRHs communicate with the base unit via CPRI connection.
B41a RRH8x20 communicates with the BBU via three CPRI ports, and
doesn't support daisy-chain mode. The synchronization and I/Q streams
within the CPRI link are forwarded to the Digital Processing section, while the
Ethernet stream is forwarded to OA&M Control.
Ports The following ports are identified:
B41a RRH8x20 Communication Ports:
• Three CPRI Ports - serve as the default communication path to the base
unit.
• AISG Port - supporting Remote Electrical Tilt via the calibration port
(OOK signal) or the AISG port (RS485 signal).
Ports B41a RRH8x20 RF Ports:
(Continued) • 8 RF ports (Tx/Rx)
• 1 Antenna calibration port
Status LEDs These provide a visual indication of the current state of the RRH. Specifically:
• B41a RRH8x20: Only one LED in the bottom of RRH, three colors to
provide general RRH status and fault identity.
3.3 Benefits
Benefits
Nokia distributed solution is designed to provide operators with the means to achieve
high quality and high capacity coverage with minimum site requirements.
B41a RRH8x20 provides eight transmit path with 20w on each path, supporting high
downlink power and up to 6 carriers of 20MHz depending on the operating mode
configuration
DN194162395 Issue: 03 © 2018 Nokia 15
Product Overview LTE B41a RRH8x20 (UZHD) Technical Description
It is designed to make available all the benefits of a Distributed Node B – excellent RF
characteristics, low OPEX and low CAPEX. These benefits are available whether the
operator chooses a truly distributed deployment, or groups RRHs and digital units to
implement a conventional Macro Node B site.
Figure 3 Site Benefits of Deploying B41a RRH8x20
Great RF Performance
• Major reductions in RF losses mean higher radiated RF power – and consuming less
power and generating less heat while doing so.
• A conventional Node B providing output power at the Node B antenna connection
typically delivers only a half output power at the antenna. By comparison, RRH can
be mounted adjacent to the antenna, delivering its full power with only minimal
feeder losses.
• Elimination of the feeder losses means B41a RRH8x20 delivers more RF output
power while consuming less power.
• Thanks to their small size and weight, the operator can locate the RRH where RF
engineering desires, minimizing trade-offs between optimum and available RF
locations.
Reduced OPEX
• Up to 50% reduction in power consumption: mounting B41a RRH8x20 close to the
antenna virtually eliminates feeder losses, lowering the RF power required and
correspondingly reducing power consumption.
• Air conditioning costs for cabins are reduced by mounting RRH outside the cabin,
unlike traditional Macro Node Bs where PAs are mounted inside the Node B cabinet.
• Transmission costs to remote areas are reduced: E1s/T1s can be leased at a
convenient location, with traffic passed to the B41a RRH8x20 by low cost optical
fibre.
16 © 2018 Nokia DN194162395 Issue: 03
LTE B41a RRH8x20 (UZHD) Technical Description Product Overview
• RRH is virtually a no-footprint solution and a noise-free (no fan) module: it minimizes
impacts on the neighbourhood and makes negotiation with site owners easier.
• The much reduced footprint (area) and weight of B41a RRH8x20 compared to a
traditional Macro Node B supports considerable reductions in monthly site rental
fees.
• The digital units and associated ancillary equipment can be deployed remotely from
the antennas, reducing the equipment in premium rental locations. For example, the
digital Node B can be placed in a basement or Node B pooling, with connection to
the RRH by fibre.
• Operation and management is simplified as number of NodeBs that need to be
managed is reduced (one BBU can serve several remote sites) and they are in the
same location.
Reduced CAPEX
• A site can be on air in less than one day, a fraction of the time required for a
traditional Node B.
• RRH can be installed where size and weight prevent deployment of traditional Macro
Node Bs, providing coverage and capacity in previously inaccessible locations.
• RRH is an easy-to-install product (weight around 15kg, volume around 20l): the
installation can be done by a single person: there is no need for a crane, reducing
installation times and costs.
• Savings in civil works are achieved by removing the need for reinforcing steel frames
or concrete plinths to support heavy Node B cabinets. (Cabinets may weigh
hundreds of Kg, while B41a RRH8x20 weighs only 21Kg)
• Its own cooling system
• Eight (8) transmit paths of 60MHz instantaneous bandwidth and up to 20W per path
• The HW is capable of supporting up to three (3) LTE carriers of 20 MHz depending
on the operating mode
• Eight (8) receive paths of 60MHz instantaneous bandwidth
• Eight (8) Broadband Power Amplifiers of 140MHz bandwidth each
• Three (3) fibre interfaces carrying downlink and uplink base band signals, as well as

RF signal-Uplink
In uplink, radio signals are received from antenna ports. They are amplified, through low
noise amplification chains and down-converted before being converted into digital
signals. The resulting digital signals go through different digital processing functions
(digital down-conversion, filtering), and are then multiplexed according to the required
CPRI format and converted into optical signals that are sent to the digital LTE Module.
RF logical structure
The following diagram shows the RF logical structure for RRH. It shows the major
components of the RRH.

(IEC) standards IEC 60825-1 Edition 2.0 (2007) and IEC 60825-2 Edition 3.1 (2007). It is
a Class I/1 laser optical fiber communication systems "product" under the IEC
classifications.
This product is designed to ensure that personnel operating the product are not
endangered by laser radiation during normal operation and fault conditions. This product
does not present a risk of eye injury because it is fully enclosed and does not contain
embedded lasers greater than Class I/1 unless otherwise noted.
f CAUTION! laser
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified
herein may result in hazardous laser radiation exposure.
Do not view directly into the laser beam with optical instruments such as a fiber
microscope because viewing of laser emission in excess of Class 1 limits significantly
increases the risk of eye damage.
Never look into the end of an exposed fiber or an open connector as long as the optical
source is switched on.
Ensure that the optical source is switched off before disconnecting optical fiber
connectors.
