4. Qualifications for Application

A. Basic Qualifications
1) Overseas Koreans: An Applicant must have completed primary, secondary and
university education outside Korea.
2) International Students Type Ⅰ
- An applicant and their both parents must be citizens of countries other than Korea.
- An applicant must have completed primary, secondary and university education equivalent to Korea.
3) International Students Type Ⅱ: An applicant must have completed primary,
Secondary and university education outside Korea equivalent to Korea.
※ Note : An applicant who holds dual nationality is not eligible to apply as a foreign student but
can apply through general admission.
B. Language Qualification
An applicant must satisfy the language requirement.
1) Korean : TOPIK Level 3 or higher
- This Korean language requirement is waived for an applicant who finishes her/his*
undergraduate or master’s program at GNU and applies for a higher degree course at
GNU(from a undergraduate program to a master's program or Combined Master's and
Ph.D. program Ⅰ, from a master's program to a Ph.D. program or Combined Master's
and Ph.D. program Ⅱ), or applies for a department which offers English Track.
* The applicant should stay in Korea at the time of application(who can extend or change her/his visa to a D2 visa)

2) English (Only applicable to the departments which offer English Track)

- TOEFL(PBT 530, CBT 197, iBT 71), IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, TEPS 600(New TEPS 327) or higher results

International students must satisfy the Korean language requirement (TOPIK Level 4 or higher, or a
successful completion of the Korean course approved by GNU Graduate School) in order to submit
a thesis for graduation.

C. Academic Qualifications
Program Qualifications

• An applicant who applies for a master’s program should hold a Bachelor’s degree or
Master’s
equivalent (or those who are expected to earn a degree by February 2023).

• An applicant who applies for a doctoral program must hold a Master’s degree or
Ph.D.
equivalent (or those who are expected to earn a degree by February 2023).

(1) 《Type Ⅰ》 An applicant who holds a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

(2) 《Type Ⅱ》 A student enrolled in a Master’s program at GNU should meet all the
Combined criteria below.
Master’s and - An applicant, in their third semester, who has completed or is expected to
Ph.D. complete 15 credits can only apply.
(Type Ⅰ, Ⅱ) - An applicant who already completed four semesters at the time of application cannot apply.

5. Screening Procedures

Steps Evaluation Criteria

in consideration of the appropriate proportion to the quota of departments.

applicant will have to submit the original bank certificate of deposit balance for the

7. Scholarships

□ On-Campus Scholarship
○ Scholarship Type: Research Scholarship
- The amount of scholarship is equivalent with tuition fees. (One of the
requirements in the table on the next page must be satisfied to apply for a
scholarship.)
○ Eligibility: Full-time students obtained their previous degree within the past five
years.
○ Amount
- 1st and 2nd semesters : Full amount of scholarship
※ Those who have less than 3.0 grade point average in the previous semester are
excluded.
- 3rd and 4th semesters (including 5th to 8th semesters of “Master’s + Doctoral”
program) : Full amount if 1↑ of the fellowship renewal selection criteria by
each degree program is fulfilled.
○ Method: Upon receipt of tuition payment and completion of fellowship selection,
the amounts will be transferred to a student’s account.
○ Criteria

advisor
※ Recommendation letter must be sent from the academic department to the Graduate
School Office after the final decision
- Research paper requirements of the table below should be met within six
months upon program completion. (Master’s students) and prior to submission

department upon their arrival after successfully admitted.

- The amount of scholarships and number of scholarship beneficiaries are subject
to change according to school budget without prior notice.

9. Dormitories

○ An applicant who indicates to stay in our dormitory in the application <form 1> will
be preferentially assigned dormitory rooms.
※ In the case of the dormitory in Chilam campus, you should ask the administrative

10. Insurance

○ International students who are admitted to the university or enrolled at GNU must
have Korean health insurance. According to the National Health Insurance Act and
its Enforcement Decree, International students who stay in Korean more than 6
months must have National Health Insurance(국민건강보험) in Korea from March
1st, 2021.

11. Important Notes

□ Before Admission
❍ If you didn’t submit your documents in a deadline, your application for graduate
will be cancelled automatically.
❍ If it is difficult to confirm the authenticity by the documents submitted, an
applicant may be requested to submit additional documents.
❍ If any false information is provided, admission will be automatically rescinded.
❍ All of documents should be written either in English or Korean. Documents not in
Korean or English should be translated into Korean or English and notarized.
Degree certificates and academic transciprts should be accompanied by Apostille
or Korean consular verification with a notarized English or Korean translation.
※ Only certificate/documents notarized within 6 months before submission will be
accepted.
❍ If applicants write their contact information(such as email address, phone number,
address, etc.) incorrectly, or they are out or contact, they are responsible for all
the inconveniences resulting from those mistakes.(Applicants may even have their
admission revoked)
❍ Applicants must clearly indicate the exact name of the department and major that
they are applying for. Refer to Appendix 1「Programs offered for admission」.
※ In principle, an applicant is not allowed to change their applying department or major once they
submit their application documents. Please carefully choose a department and major after
consulting with your prospective academic advisor.

C. Required documents: Successful applicants must submit one of the following documents:
① Apostille Certificate of your previous acadmemic documents.
② Documents verified by the Korean Embassy in other countries or the Embassy in Korea.
③ Documents confirmed by the China Academic Degree(CHSI) & Graduate Education Development
Center(CDGDC). (Only for applicants who hold a degree from universities in China)

❍ In the case of submitting a certificate of expected graduation, the applicant must

submit a diploma or graduation certificate with Apostille or Korean consular
verification upon their graduation. (Deadline: ‘23. 2. 24.)
❍ Admission result will be sent to successful applicants by email respectively. (Please
reply back to us whether you will enroll or not).
❍ Successful applicants should pay tuition fees to the designated banks with a tuition
bill downloaded from the GNU website.
❍ Successful applicants should pay tuition during the designated period. If not,
admission will be rescinded.
❍ After paying tuition fee, successful applicants should submit additional documents
by OIEC’s request for visa process. (Office of International and External Cooperation
: +82-55-772-0275, mjkim8812@gnu.ac.kr.)

Please apply after you inquire at the Korean embassy in your own countries or the Immigration office
about visa issue status. You should also inquire at the Korean embassy in your own counties about
the requirements for visa applicant such as Verification of Academic Degree/Background, Language
Ability and a Proof of Financial Guarantees.(If applicants can not get a visa because you do not meet
requirements for visa such as Financial status, you are responsible for it.)

❍ If an applicant gained admission in an illegal way, admission shall be cancelled

anytime.
❍ Documents submitted will not be returned to the applicant under any circumstances. (If it is
just only one original, the certificate can be returned after the screening process is
completed)
❍ A new student is not allowed to take leave of absence for their first semester.
(Except for taking a leave of absence for Class 1 infectious disease)
❍ Orientation schedule will be separately notified by the OIEC.

❍ This Guide is written both in Korean and English. If there are any discrepancies
between the languages, the Korean version will be only considered. Other matters
that are not specified in the Guide are subject to the Gyeongsang National
University policy and regulations.

to Obligation for Full Scholarship both in Korean and English to their department
