Hello!

For your quiz covering notes receivable, you will be using the following format:
DR.AccountLetter.Amount.CR.AccountLetter.Amount

This was suggested by your fellow students to avoid future issues regarding spaces in between your answers
and getting marked incorrect by Canvas. It might seem confusing or difficult to apply especially because
periods are not too visible. Do not worry! I will show you some tips and tricks you can do to make it easier. All
you need would be applications or programs like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel and the Find and Replace
function. Using these, you can type your answers normally using spaces, and then change them when you will
be inputting your answers in Canvas.
Let’s have the following items
Answer Issue
DR A 2,000 CR B 2,000 None. No extra spaces in between
DR A 2,000 CR B 2,000 An extra space was placed after B
DR A 2,000 CR B 2,000 Two extra spaces placed DR and three extra spaces placed after B
DR A 2,000 CR B 2,000 Five extra spaces placed after B

1. Just type your answers as is using spaces (or whatever character you might prefer, like hyphen or
underscore) in MS Word or MS Excel.

2. When you are finished and are about to input your answers in Canvas:
For MS Word, under Home > Editing > Replace;
For MS Excel, under Home > Editing > Find & Select > Replace; or
Press CTRL + F (Find) or CTRL + H (Replace)

3. Under replace, type one space in the “Find what:” section and type a period in the “Replace with:” section.
Then, click Replace All.

4. All spaces have now been replaced with periods. You will see that your answers will now be as seen below:
DR.A.2,000.CR.B.2,000
DR.A.2,000.CR.B..2,000
DR...A.2,000.CR.B....2,000
DR.A.2,000.CR.B......2,000
As you can see, other items have multiple periods. If you input these items in Canvas, they will be marked
incorrect. Oh no! We wouldn’t want that, would we?
5. Open Find and Replace again. This time, type two periods for Find What: and type one period for Replace
With. Then, click Replace All.

6. You answers will now be as seen below:

DR.A.2,000.CR.B.2,000
DR.A.2,000.CR.B.2,000
DR..A.2,000.CR.B..2,000
DR.A.2,000.CR.B...2,000
But there are still multiple periods, so you just have to keep pressing Replace All until you get the message:
“Word/Excel has finished its search and has made 0 replacements.”

7. When 0 replacements are made, that means that there are no more multiple periods in the whole file. You
will see your answers as follows:
DR.A.2,000.CR.B.2,000
DR.A.2,000.CR.B.2,000
DR.A.2,000.CR.B.2,000
DR.A.2,000.CR.B.2,000
VOILA! Your answers are now in compliance with the format!

8. At this point, you can just copy and paste your answers from Word/Excel to Canvas. Don’t worry! We have
tried it out for ourselves. Just be careful on what you are copying and pasting, because you might copy the
right answer and paste in the box of a different item. You can also manually input them if you are more
comfortable with it.

Additional notes:
-You may want to have your answers in bold.format so that the period is more visible. This will not affect your
answers even if you copy them from Word/Excel still in the bold format.
-Make on final check before inputting your answers in Canvas, because you might have debited or credit the
wrong account title, or maybe you forgot to place DR/CR before the account title, or maybe you forgot the
comma separator for numerical figures.
-When using replace, by default it will search the whole file. You can limit the search by selecting a portion of
the document first before performing the search. You may also want to place your answers on a separate
document.
