This document summarizes a theology assignment where students were paired as prayer partners to meet weekly for bible readings, prayers, and reflections. The student reflects on meeting with their partner and discussing topics they did not expect, which allowed them both to self-reflect and develop empathy. They relate their experience to a bible passage about having faith reinvigorated by opening scripture together. The student concludes that listening to others helps overcome prejudices and gain wisdom for future emotional challenges.

In times of difficulty and trials, prayer and self-reflection
lift us up, but it is the people around us that push us onward. Our Theology subject decided to have the prayer partner activity, where we meet our partner at least once a week, and have bible readings, prayers, reflections, etc. In a school year, where we only know our classmates virtually and not truly, the activity allowed us to open up and go beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones so that we may express ourselves that we have been keeping deep down. It also allowed us to see different perspectives that we never knew existed and made us understand what our partner’s situation is in his current moment.
Reflection
For once a week, my prayer partner and I have a chat. We spoke
about different topics, a lot of which we never expected to talk about. It empowered us to self-reflect and to develop to become better people. There was one time where my prayer partner talked about how difficult it is for him to read emotions. He can’t read a room or a conversation even if it was shouting at his face. He angered a lot of people because of his inability. This led to my realization of how different people can be in the case of empathy. Not a lot of people can understand to the extent that I have been blessed with and I now realize that.
The Road to Emmaus can relate greatly to what my prayer
partner and I did. Especially the verses, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us? They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.” The verses speak of the two men’s faith being reinvigorated by our Lord, Jesus Christ. Like the bible chapter, we may have doubts about what will happen, but we only have to believe and see that the truth was already there to see in the first place. Only then can we finally live completely.
This experience taught me to always listen before having your
doubts. We may have these prejudices and grievances in the start, but in order for us to truly understand, we have to listen first. Hopefully this experience will push me to be able to undertake more emotional trial up my way and better perceive them with better wisdom.
Conclusion
In conclusion, everyone needs prayer and self-reflection
every day, but once in a while, it is good to have someone who is willing to listen to you and what’s been bugging you. All that I can say now is that this experience has been a rollercoaster of a ride, and I can’t wait to be in line for the next one. Documentation
