The Price of Education
Education is still a major issue in many countries around the world. Even though
there has been some improvement, we’re still miles off the goal: equality for all.
Why is access to education so important? Is it a big problem if part of the
population does not go to school? The answer to these questions is relatively
simple. Receiving a good education is crucial. We interviewed some people to find
out why:
“There are those that argue that education is a service that should be paid for,
similar to how other products are bought and sold. Others think that making
education accessible to all benefits society as a whole.” -Jane, 31
“In Shanghai, there is a fund for early childhood education programs, which the
government provides. As a result, close to 98 percent of the children in Shanghai
were enrolled in kindergarten by 2009. That allows citizens to get better jobs.
Better jobs pay more money. In the future, more money means that people can
afford a better education for their children.” -Lisa, 28
“Finland’s public system contributes to producing some children who are world
leaders in reading, mathematics, and science for their age group. All students in
Finland study in the same classrooms, even if they are at different levels. Students
who have problems are given extra help. And there are no private schools. This
means that Finnish students are given free school meals, healthcare, and mental
health services. Teachers must have a master’s degree, which the government
pays for, to help them succeed.” -Marcos, 38
