METHOD STATEMENT FOR CONCRETE TOPPING & SAND-

CEMENT SCREED
Scope:

This methodology covers the preparation and placement of a concrete

topping and sand-cement screed mix on structural slab surface in
preparation for final floor finish and to correct undulated and out of tolerance
slab elevations. The following table shall be used to classify the material and
method to be used for corresponding slab thickness ranges:

Slab Thickness Range Type of Material

5-65 mm Sand-Cement Screed
66-100 mm 3000 Psi Concrete Topping with
diameter 10 rebar drilled on slab
*Note: Maximum topping to be poured is 100mm.

Materials:

1. Concrete Topping / Sand Cement Screed Mix

2. Diameter 10 Rebar
3. Concrete Epoxy
4. Concrete Curing Compound

Tools/Equipments:

1. Concrete Mixer
2. Concrete Vibrator
3. Screeding Tools

Manpower:

1. Mason
2. Carpenter

Procedure:

1. Clearing / cleaning of the area.

2. Remove concrete laitance / loose concrete.
3. Establish finish elevation markings.
4. Prepare guide buttons on floor in accordance with the required topping
elevation. Make sure the thickness of finish is considered on the guide
buttons.
5. Drill diameter 10 rebar on slab with 300mm spacing o.c.
6. Dampen the concrete slab with water for 24 hours to saturate it.
7. Mix grout mixture to a ratio of 1 bags of cement to 1.5 cu.ft. sand with
sufficient amount of water to attain consistency of a thick paint.
8. Apply the grout to the concrete surface in segment keeping short
distance ahead of the concrete topping or sand-cement screed placing
operation that follows it.
9. If the slab thickness is 25 mm and below prepare a mixture of 3000 Psi
at 28 days sand-cement screed using the following volumetric
proportion:

21
Water liters
Cement 1 bag
3
Fine Aggregates cu.ft.

10. If the slab thickness is 25mm and above, prepare a mixture of

3000 Psi at 28 days concrete topping using the following volumetric
proportion:
Water 21 liters
Cement 1 bag
Fine Aggregates 3 cu.ft.
3/8 Coarse
Aggregates 3 cu.ft.
Admixture 0.4 liters
11. Apply the concrete topping or sand-cement screed to the
required depth. Make sure that the concrete topping or sand-cement
screed is evenly applied and vibrated sufficiently before finishing
operation takes place.
12. Level the surface to the desired finish.
13. Curing of concrete must be maintained within 48hours using
water.

Health and Safety:

1. Use proper PPE during conduct of work.

2. Avoid direct contact with concrete & sand-cement screed material.
3. Utilized the concrete mixing, hauling and vibrating equipment in
accordance with the manufacturers’ instruction.
