LITERARY ELEMENTS
1. The Caucasian War in Chechnya, Russia, 1994
2. CHARACTERS:
Sonja - Natasha's sister and a doctor, initially refused to care for Havaa but later
accepted her.
Akhmed - a dedicated young man with dreams of becoming a doctor, saves
Havaa from battle and requests that Sonja adopt her.
Natasha - Sonja's sister, who died earlier in the story
Havaa - a small child rescued by Ahmad after her parents were kidnapped by
insurgents and Russians.

B. COMPREHENSION
1. Marra's novel takes place over the course of five days in 2004 in post-war
Chechnya, and it is clear that, while the war is officially over, the battles continue.
There is residual destruction, famine, population displacement, shortages of
everything, and, most importantly, fear and uncertainty.

2. Anthony Marra wrote Chechnya. It depicts a scene from the Caucasian War in
Chechnya, Russia. Under the command of Imam Shamil, Chechen Muslims
fought back against the conquest in the preceding war.

3. Sonja and Ahkmed agreed that if Sonja adopts his daughter, he will work as a
nurse's aide in the hospital.

4. One of the reasons for the main character's significant change in attitude from
begging to the story's conclusion was the death of her sister.

5. The writer needs to narrate the events that happened to assist readers in
visualizing the events of the story and to assist them in making a connection
between what they are reading and what they are feeling.
