SYS 1005 - Mental Health Simulation

DISCLAIMER

● It is possible the simulation may result in uncomfortable feelings.

● You have the right to stop participating in the simulation at any point.
● It is hoped, however, the simulation will serve as a helpful experience to increase
empathy when helping people navigate complex systems.
● Need support?
○ If you are experiencing distress, you can notify Melanie via email).
○ Check out the“Counselling & Other Emotional Support Options” section in
the Important Resources Moodle shell
Overview

You will participate in a virtual simulation (located in the Week 11 heading in Moodle)
which will consist of a series of interactive slides and videos. Prompts within the slides
will provide you with instructions as to what you must do throughout the simulation (e.g.
speak out loud as if you are really interacting with the person in the video, respond to
reflection questions). When you are finished with the simulation, you will participate in a
reflective debrief.

Worth

20% of final grade (graded based on the Grading Rubric listed at the bottom)

Due Date

November 21, 2022, by 11:59 pm

Simulation Preparation

● Schedule 3 hours of uninterrupted time to complete the simulation in one sitting

between Monday, November 14, 2022 and Sunday, November 20, 2022
● You must complete the simulation alone. You must not discuss the simulation
with classmates until after the due date
● Use a laptop or computer as cell phones may not show all the features of the
simulation
● Make sure you have audio.
● Have a document (e.g. Microsoft Word, Google Doc) ready to use as your
“journal” throughout the simulation as this will be part of what you submit for
grading.

Instructions

1. BEFORE you begin the simulation, respond to the below scenario from the
perspective of a navigator based on your current knowledge about the mental
health system. You will not lose marks if your recommendation is not correct.
You can include this above your simulation journal entries.
○ Scenario: You are working as a navigator. Your client has Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and needs therapy. Share what you would
recommend as if you are actually talking to your client.

2. Open the simulation slideshow and read through the instructions on the slides
which will explain what to expect and what to do (e.g. write in your “journal.”)
Your journal must be professional and organized so it is easy to identify what part
of the simulation you’re referring to.

3. Respond to these reflective questions:

○ Would you still recommend the same thing(s) you did before the
simulation? Why or why not? Be specific. Explain!
○ What was your understanding of OCD before versus after the simulation?
(E.g. did it change? Did it expand?)
○ How will your experience with this simulation help you as a future
navigator? Be specific. Explain!
○ As a navigator, we should know the ins and outs of systems and prepare
clients as much as possible. What sorts of things would you prepare a
client for with suspected OCD? Be specific! Explain!

4. Submit items in one document (pre-simulation response, simulation journal tasks

and your post-simulation (reflective) responses) to the corresponding Dropbox on
Moodle.

Simulation Tasks 1-3 4-5 6 7

● Journal tasks are evidently informed by the information

provided in the simulation.
● Specific insights have been provided with supporting
examples to show me that you’ve immersed yourself in
the experience.

Organization and Completion of Tasks 0 1 2-3 4

● All required journal tasks (including the application

form completed in Google Forms) are completed.
● The student has given consideration to the organization
of their journal submission making it easy to follow and
locate information.
● Consideration to professionalism (e.g. proper spelling,
formatting, etc.) is evident.

Reflective Response 1-4 5-6 7-8 9

● Responses deepen the learning experience through

meaningful, personalized and specific analysis of one’s
experience related to both navigation and OCD with
supporting rationale.
