i. Before playing a sitar, a sitarist tries to adjust the tension and pluck the strings suitably.
What is he trying to adjust by doing so?
- He is trying to adjust the pitch (shrillness) of the sound.
iii. When we put our ears on a railway track, we can hear the sound of an approaching train, but
it’s sound cannot be heard through air. Why?
- It is because the speed of sound is greater in solids than in air.
iv. What differences will you hear in a sound if there is an increase in:
a) Amplitude b) Frequency.
- a) Amplitude increases, loudness of the sound increases.
b) Frequency increases pitch of the sound increases (shriller will be the sound).
v. Would an explosion on the moon be heard on the earth? Justify your answer.
- An explosion on the moon would not be heard on the earth because sound needs a
material medium (solid, liquid or gas) to propagate.
- There is no medium in space which can allow the propagation of sound.
vi. Give reason: Voices of men, women and children sound different.
- In men, the vocal cords are about 20 mm in length.
- In women, they are about 15 mm in length and in children they are very short.
- That is why, the sounds produced by them differ.
vii. A drum produces a heavy sound, while a whistle produces a shrill sound. Give reason.
- A drum vibrates with a low frequency and therefore produces a low-pitched heavy
sound.
- On the other hand, a whistle has a high frequency and therefore, produces a high-
pitched shrill sound.

v. Audible frequency range. 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz
vi. Rapid to and fro movements. Vibrations
vii. Hearing impairment which is usually from birth. Total hearing impairment
ii. A cracker is burst at a distance of 1650 m from a person. After how much time
will he hear the sound? (speed of sound in air = 330 meter per second)
Speed of sound in air = 330 m/s ( Given)
Distance = 1650 m
Time = ?
Speed = Distance
Time
So, Time = Distance = 1650 = 165 = 5 s
Speed 330 33

(Q6 and Q7. To be done in Science CW)
Q7. Two different vibrating objects produce two types of sounds X and Y. The sound X can
be easily heard, whereas the sound Y cannot be heard by a man having normal range of
hearing. The sound Y can be heard by a bat. Identify sound X and sound Y.
A7. X is sonic sound.
- Y is ultrasonic sound.
