and sold his burro to Rupe for $10. with Rupe for many years. Rupe was never

Great
looking donkey!
What’s his name
and how old
he is?
I call him
"Prunes" since he’s the
color of a prune. He's
twelve years old and
should be able to work
with you for decades!
Rupe would trust Prunes would always return to Rupe faithfully.
Prunes to leave his Before returning, Prunes visited the people of
prospecting campsite... Fairplay, who feed him biscuits and pancakes.
Here
you go Prunes,
buddy. I brought
your favorite.
Eat up!
He was also a rancher and politician. Yet in his old Prunes was such a part of the town of Fairplay
age, he spent winters in Denver where it was not that he could always count on a smile and a snack
as bitterly cold. Instead of taking Prunes from from any home he visited! He had received more
his beloved community, Rupe let him free! than enough food to last through the winter!
Everyone thought he enjoyed his retirement!
Prunes died in 1930 at the ripe-old age of 63! Rupe died the following year, when he was 81.
That sure is a long time for a donkey! His ashes are buried next to where Prunes was
buried, underneath the memorial. Their
extraordinary bond is still celebrated today!
