WRITING WORKSHEET 1

1.

Read and comment on the following response:

Illustrated in the chart are statistics concerning the average weekly allocation of families’
expenditure from one particular country in two different years, 1968 and 2018. Units are
measured in percentage.
Overall, there existed three clear trends visible in the data. While food, constituting the
largest amount of households’ spending, along with energy, clothes and personal goods,
suffered a sharp drop in fundings, housing, transportation and leisure had received more
emphasis after 50 years. Meanwhile, household goods experienced a period of stability in
the surveyed time frame.
As can be seen from the bar graph, food used to top the chart at 35% in 1968, albeit almost
halving to 17% and eventually being overtaken by leisure in 2018. Similarly, the outlay on
three remaining categories (including fuel and power, clothing and footwear, and personal
goods) all steeply falled by half compared to their previous records, to 4%, 5% and 4%,
respectively.
By contrast, spendings on housing, transport and leisure had doubled by 2018, with the latter
finishing at the top position at approximately 23%. In the meantime, household goods
stabilised at the rate of about 6% throughout the period. During the course of 50 years, it
seemed that families’ spending priority in the surveyed country had moved out of bare
necessities into other aspects of life.
