ASSIGNMENT

1. Define Popular Culture.

Popular culture is the set of practices, beliefs, and objects that embody the most
broadly shared meanings of a social system. It includes media objects,
entertainment and leisure, fashion and trends, and linguistic conventions, among
other things.

2. Explain the different theories and concepts of Popular Culture

Gender theories- Gender theory-informed approaches recognize gender as
inextricably linked with social construct - that the meanings attached to sex and
other differences are socially created.
Pop culture also involves representation of gender and sexuality that might be based
more on stereotypes than reality. Feminist and cultural theorists have shown how
exposure to images of conventionally attractive women can make girls and women
feel inadequate.
Cultural liberalism- Cultural liberalism is a social philosophy that expresses the
social dimension of liberalism and advocates the freedom of individuals to choose
whether to conform to cultural norms. In the words of Henry David Thoreau, it is
often expressed as the right to "march to the beat of a different drummer".

Liberal Pluralism- Cultural pluralism is defined as the societal condition in which

minority groups within a society can maintain their distinctive cultural identities,
values, and practices provided that they are consistent with the laws and values of
the wider society.

Interactionism - Interactionists see culture as being created and maintained by the

ways people interact and in how individuals interpret each other's actions.
Proponents of this theory conceptualize human interactions as a continuous
process of deriving meaning from both objects in the environment and the actions
of others.
