DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

MODULE 1: RECTILINEAR KINEMATICS: CONTINUOUS MOTION

Mechanics – a branch of the physical sciences that is concerned with the state of rest or motion of
bodies subjected to the action of forces.

Engineering mechanics two areas of study: statics & dynamics

Kinematics - treats only the geometric aspects of the motion. No forces involve.

Kinetics – the analysis of the forces causing the motion.

Rectilinear Kinematics – the kinematics of a particle is characterized by specifying, at any given instant,
the particle’s position, velocity, and acceleration.

Note:

 When finding the average velocity, the ‘s’ in the formula indicates displacement. Whereas in
average speed, ‘s’ indicates distance.
 In variable acceleration, do not include the initial s or v in the equation for finding the distance.
Only include initial give if finding position or displacement. THEORY
