The Sawm– a pillar of Islam


A. Check – up:
1. What is the Arabic word for fasting? What does it mean?
Ans: - Sawm ‫ صوم‬is the Arabic word for fasting. It means to keep away
from something.

2. What is fasting?
Ans: - Fasting is to keep away from eating, drinking, foul talks and all
things shameful throughout the hours of daylight.

3. When was fasting made obligatory?


Ans: - it was made obligatory in the second year of Hijrah.

4. What were the Muslims commanded to do until then?


Ans:- They were commanded to perform the fast of Ashura, on the 10 th
Muharram.

5. Does Ramadan fall at the same time year after year? Why?
Ans:-No, it does not fall at the same time every year. It passes through all
seasons. It is because of the difference of 10 days between lunar and solar years.

6. What is Ashura?
Ans:-Ashurah is the 10th of the month of Muharram; a month of the Lunar
calendar.

7. What is the relationship between the Qur’an and the month of
Ramadan?
8. Ans:-It honours the memory of sending down of the Qur’an which took
place in the Holy month of Ramadan.

9. What is the Layalatul-Qadr? What is the reward of passing the


Layalatul-Qadr in prayer?

Ans: - Laylatul-Qadr is the night of Destiny. It is one of the odd nights of
the last third of the month of Ramadan. It is better than one thousand
nights. If someone passes this night in worship, it is as if he has worshipped
more than 1000 months and he will be granted Allah’s special mercy.

B. Write a short note on each of the following:

1. Benefits and virtues of fasting.


It makes us conscious of Allah. It provides an exacting exercise in self-
discipline and it strengthens and deepens our faith. It makes us
closer to Allah almighty and piousness.
It makes the faster realize through his experience, how it feels
like to be hungry and thirsty and makes him king enough with poor.
It liberates us from desires and temptations. It teaches us self
control and keeps us away from sins and shameful things.

2. A guide to fasting.
1. Always have light meal in ‘suhur’.
2. Break the fast in time with date and water.
3. Don’t eat too much after breaking the fast.
4. Recite the Holy Qur’an as much you can.
5. Offer Travih prayer.
6. Seek only Allah’s pleasure.

7. Keep yourself ritually clean.
8. Respect this month.
9. Pray Allah as much you can.
10. Don’t tire you during fasting.
11. Don’t indulge in shameful talking.
12. Don’t pick a quarrel, don’t say bad words don’t do evil deed and
don’t indulge in foul talks.
13. Don’t tell a lie.

C. Further questions:
1. Fasting commences with the new moon of Ramadan. Explain.
Ans: - Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said:”Don’t fast until you see
the new moon and don’t end fasting until you see it again…” The month of
Ramadan commences with the appearance of new crescent as the prophet
said, so we have to observe our fast only after looking at crescent or getting
and authentic news regarding this.

2. When shoul one end fasting?


Ans: - One should end fasting soon after the sunset and hearing Azan of
Maghrib if any Masjid is in the vicinity.

3. What should we do if the sky is clouded over?


Ans: - If the sky is cloudy and the crescent is not seen, neither any update
is there regarding fasting so, then we have to complete 30 days of Shaban.

4. On whom is the fasting obligatory?


Ans:- The fasting is obligatory on the following people:
 Fully grown, men /women
 Sane
 Physically fit
 Healthy

5. What sort of people may not fast?
Ans:-The following may exempt their fast:
 Children who have not come of age.
 The insane.
 The sick.
 The travelling.
 Men and women who are too old and feeble.

6. Are they absolutely exempted from fasting?


Ans:-No, the sick , the travelling and the women who are breast feeding
or who have been delivered are required to make up the lost days later on,
when the sickness is gone or when the journey ends, while the insane is not
required to make them up.

7. “None of you should fast one day or two days just before Ramadan.”
Explain.
Ans: - This is in order not to mix Fard with Naafilah.

8. Is fasting Obligatory on children who have not come of age?


Ans: - No, Children, who have not come of age, are exempted from the
obligation of fasting but it is strongly recommended that they should fast
quite often to habituate themselves to fasting.

9. What is meant by ‘Muftir’?


Ans: - Things that break a fast are called ‘Muftir’ (sin. Muftirah)

10.Mention the things that annual the fast?


Ans: - Eating and drinking intentionally between day break, taking evergy
injections, rinsing the water or dropping the liquid into nostril and ear or
vomiting purposely full of mouth etc will break the fast.

11.Mention the things that do not annul a fast?
Ans:-Rinsing the mouth with water, using a ‘miswak’, sniffing water into
the nostrils, taking a bath or pouring water on the head to relieve the
severity of heat and thirst, using perfumes, or swallowing one’s own saliva
and eating forgetfully don’t break the fast.

12.Is breaking a fast intentionally before its time a sin?


Ans: - Yes, it is a serious sin and it will bring Allah’s rage to us.
