QUESTIONS/APPLICATIONS:

1. Draw a graph showing the number of carbon atoms (x-axis) and heats of combustion (y-axis)

2. Make a generalization on the relationship between the number of carbon atoms and heat of combustion
based on the graph.
- The number of carbon atoms is directly proportional to the heat of combustion as the enthalpy of
combustion increases, the number of carbon atoms also increases. There is a difference in the amount
of energy required for breaking bonds and the amount released when new bonds are formed. If the
bonds are stronger than the broken ones, the energy released will be larger than the energy invested.
Therefore, the enthalpy change should be increasing because the more carbons the alcohol has, the
more bonds will be formed.

3. Based on the obtained heat of combustion, which among the three alcohols is the best fuel? Why?

- Butanol, because in order to be considered as the best fuel is to have higher heat combustion and as well as the
mass (or volume) of the substance after combustion. Since Butanol has the highest among them, therefore, it is
the best fuel.
4. A quantity of 1.435 g of naphthalene (C10H8), a pungent-smelling substance used in moth repellents, was burned in
a constant-volume calorimeter. Consequently, the temperature of water rose from 20.28°C to 25.95°C. If the heat
capacity of the bomb plus water was 10.17 kJ/°C, calculate the heat of combustion of naphthalene on a molar basis; that
is, find the molar heat of combustion.
5. A 0.5786 g of unknown substance is burned in a constant – volume bomb calorimeter that has a heat
capacity of 1.674 kJ/°C. After the reaction, the temperature increased by 1.432°C. Find the heat given-off by
the burning of the unknown, in kJ/g.
