READING
Read the passage and choose the best answer.
In many modern countries, people think of a family as a mother, a father and their children. But
this is not the only kind of the family group. In some parts of the world, a family group has many
other members. This kind of large family is called an "extended family" or a "joint family".
The joint family includes all living relatives on either the mother's or the father's side of the
family. It is made up of grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and cousins. They
live together in a large house or in huts built close together.
Early people probably live in joint families. They had to be part of a large in order to survive.
The members of the group help each other hunt. They work together to protect themselves from
dangerous animals and other enemies.
In China, people lived in joint families. When a son married, he and his wife lived at his parents'
home. Unmarried daughters remained at home until they married. Chinese children felt very loyal
to their parents. Younger members of the joint family always took care of the old ones.
India and Africa, some people still live in joint families. The members of a joint family share
their earnings and property. If one member of the group becomes ill or has bad luck, the others
help the person. As in the past, the members of the joint family offer each other help and protection.

4. A. instance B. person C. signal D. attract
Read the passage and choose the best answer.
When we meet people for the first time, we often make decisions about them based entirely on
how they look. And of course, we too are being judged on our appearance. Undoubtedly, it’s what’s
inside that’s important but sometimes we can send out the wrong signals and so get a negative
reaction, simply by wearing inappropriate clothing.
When selecting your clothes each day, it is therefore important to think about who you’re likely
to meet, where you are going to be spending most of your time and what tasks you are likely to
perform. Clearly, on a practical level, some outfits will be more appropriate to different sorts of
activity and this will dictate your choice to an extent. However, there’s no need to abandon your
individual taste completely. After all, if you dress to please somebody else’s idea of what looks
good, you may end up feeling uncomfortable and not quite yourself.
Some colours bring your natural colouring to life and others can give you a washed-out
appearance. Try out new ones by all means, but remember that dressing in bright colours when you
really like subtle neutral tones or vice versa will make you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable.
You know deep down where your own taste boundaries lie. It may be fun to cross these sometimes,
but do take care not to go too far all at once.
Reappraising your image isn’t selfish because everyone who comes into contact with you will
benefit. You’ll look better and you’ll feel a better person all round. And if in doubt, you only need
to read Professor Albert Mehrabian’s book Silent Messages, which showed that the impact we
make on each other depends 55 percent on how we look and behave, 38 percent on how we speak,
and only seven percent on what we actually say.

After two decades of growing student enrollments and economic prosperity, business schools
in the United States have started to face harder times. Only Harvard's MBA School has shown a
substantial increase in enrollment in recent years. Both Princeton and Stanford have seen decreases
in their enrollments. Since 1990, the number of people receiving Masters in Business
Administration (MBA) degrees, has dropped about 3 percent to 75,000, and the trend of lower
enrollment rates is expected to continue.
There are two factors causing the decrease in seeking an MBA degree. The first one is that
many graduates of four-year colleges are finding that an MBA degree does not guarantee a plush
job on Wall Street or in other financial districts of major American cities. Many of the entry-level
management jobs are going to students graduating with Master of Arts degrees in English and the
humanities as well as those holding MBA degrees. Students have asked the question, "Is an MBA
degree really what I need to be best prepared for getting a good job?" The second major factor has
been the cutting of American payrolls and the lower number of entry-level jobs being offered.
Business needs are changing, and MBA schools are struggling to meet the new demands.

In 1620 the Pilgrims made a difficult trip across the ocean from England. They landed in
what is now Massachusetts. In England the Pilgrims had not been allowed to freely practice their
religion. So, they went to the New World in search of religious freedom.
The Pilgrims' first winter was very hard. Almost half the group died of cold, hunger and disease.
But the Indians of Massachusetts taught the Pilgrims to plant corn, to hunt and to fish. When the
next fall came, the Pilgrims had plenty of food. They were thankful to God and the Indians and had
a feast to give thanks. They invited the Indians to join them. This was the first Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving became a national holiday many years later because of the effort of a woman
named Sarah Hale. For forty years Sarah Hale wrote to each president and asked for a holiday of
Thanksgiving. At last she was successful. In 1863 President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a
holiday.
