This reading package will be used as an informal reading inventory in line with the
Department of Education’s administration of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PHIL-IRI).

This contextualized tool of the Schools Division of Isabela is composed of four different
graded passages designed to determine the individual student’s performance in oral reading,
listening comprehension, and silent reading for Step 2 and Step 3 (Optional). Developed from
varied text types for Junior High School, each package has four reading passages with twenty (10)
comprehension questions that are literal, inferential, and critical levels.
Specifically, these reading assessment materials will be used as follows:
STEP 2

assess word recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension level):
For Set Passage A: USE THE LITERARY TEXT -written and/or spoken work
distinguished by its aesthetic excellence that follows either grammatical or metrical structure

For Set Passage B: USE INFORMATIONAL TEXT- nonfiction writing, including prints,
digital and multimedia, written with the intention of informing the reader about a specific
topic.

STEP 3 (Optional)

USE TRANSACTIONAL TEXT- non-fiction writing genre that intends to communicate
information between individuals or groups for a specific purpose: to persuade, argue, advise,
and/or inform.
For the administration of Silent Reading Test (when a learner reads a selection independently and
answers comprehension questions to assess the reading rate and reading comprehension level):
USE ACADEMIC TEXT- written informal, objective, and technical. It is formal by avoiding

LITERARY TEXT

(Passage A)
Three Passions I Have Lived For
By Bertrand Russel

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy - ecstasy so great

that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this
joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness ... I have sought it,
finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the
prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined.

With equal passion, I have sought knowledge. I have wished to

understand the hearts of men…why the stars shine. And I have tried to
apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux.
A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward
the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain
reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors,
helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness,
poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to
alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

\(Passage C)
SPORTS JOURNALISM: A CLOSER STRIKE
Alejandro C. Rodriguez

Imagine yourself being hired for a job. The nature of work will be
watching basketball, football, or swimming. Then, you will be writing or
reporting stories about it. This is what sports journalism is all about.
Sports journalism is never new to Filipinos. The Philippines is home of
the world‛s famous athletes. Just as how the Greeks sparked sports in 850
B.C.E., Filipinos, too, embraced sports when they became avid fans shortly
after the Americans introduced it in 1898. To be updated with sports events
and competitions became a culture. Relieving winning moments in the
newspapers or on social media became a habit.
This highly technical discipline is traditionally known as sports
reporting. It is a specialized field of journalistic writing and reporting of all
forms of sports, from physical fitness, mental well-being, and social
interactions. It is practical in nature. It demands a wide range of skills and
intensive knowledge on various sports genres or events.
Sports journalists work in all media, including print, television
broadcasting and the internet. This requires more than sitting in the stands
and informing the public of who won or lost the game. It is understanding the
basics of story development, interviewing, media laws, rules of the games,
the coaches, and the records among others.
The audience of sporting events are considered as generally the most
knowledgeable and critical of all. They are expected to know a lot about
sports themselves. They expect that a sports journalist knows more about
sports. Therefore, he will not get away with inaccuracy in sports writing. He
will also please his writing audience. Thus, it is important to consider several
groups of people: the players, the spectators, the analysts, and the punters.
Players are the people involved in the game. Even at their level, they
want to know the results of their own team and of their future opponents.
With it, they would know how to improve their performance. They would at
least know how strong their opponents are. Spectators are also crucial in the
context. They are the avid fans themselves. These people are always agitated
to see the results, reports of matches, and other information about the
game. The analysts or the casual readers or watchers are very keen and
knowledgeable. They read or watch in a casual yet analytic way. Punters, the
last one, like to gamble on the outcome of sports especially in boxing or horse
racing. They want facts and analysis to help them increase their chances of
winning.

Contextualized Reading Assessment Materials in English for Grade 8

More than knowing the audience is possessing the skills mandatory

to become a sports journalist. The core skill one must have excellent
communication skills. To report the news in print or in broadcast, you have
to be good at grammar, vocabulary, and effective communication. Reporting
the facts of the news has to be impartial and without inserting your
opinion or bias into the story. You also need to work well with other
journalists, editors, and news directors. You must develop contacts and
conduct interviews. Thus, you need good people skills. Of course, you need
to be persistent in your pursuit of the story. You must also have the
stamina. The work of sports journalists is often fast paced. The hours can
be long and exhausting.
Now, if you have these skills, then you might become the next
Sports Anchor, Sports News Reporter, Television Sports News Anchor,
Sports Writer, Sports Editor, or Sports Analyst. With your strong
interest and equal fervor for sports, you are now a cunning sports
journalist informing and entertaining the public.

(Passage D)
g.(A Book Review)
It is truly amazing when we learn life lessons from someone who
experienced both the ups and downs of life, including finding and losing love.
This is how I find Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie. Mitch finished his
college degree from a university where he met professor Morrie Schwartz.
They became good friends while Mitch was a student. Morrie served as his
mentor and philosophical guide, but they lost contact after he graduated. He
was worried by the early death of his favorite uncle and afraid that he, too, will
die young. He then stopped his dream of becoming a pianist and became a well-
paid journalist. Sixteen years later, he met Morrie again. He began visiting him
after learning that he was sick and was nearing death. Continuing his role as
mentor in Albom‛s life, he now shared teachings about life itself rather than
academic subjects. Whenever they saw each other every Tuesday, Morrie would
share his experiences about love, happiness, and death, and the lessons he had
learned from them.
The warm relationship shown between a teacher and a student is the best
thing that I like about this book. It turned into a beautiful friendship. It is
what a teacher-student relationship should be like. Albom has proven that
listening, as an important part of learning, really helps in building friendship.
Also, reading about his visits to Morrie reminded me that time is
precious. Therefore, I should know how to use it wisely.
I would really recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a new
outlook about life and death. The book is also for those who love reading stories
full of wisdom and memories.
