New variant of SATEL radio M3-TR9 (900MHz)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Introduction A new variant of SATEL radio M3-TR9 (HW 3.4) had to be introduced for GS16,
GS18, iCG70 and CCD20/21 due to procurement problems of the SATEL
processor. The new radio variants have the same performance as the previous
ones, also the same Leica article number. They can be identified via the
hardware version on the label or via SERIS readout.

Spare Part 99855730 SATEL M3-TR9 (TA31) 99855730 SATEL M3-TR9 (TA31)

E-mail: service.support@leica-geosystems.com 1/2 http://service.leica-geosystems.com

Service Action In case of service, the radios can be mixed up.
A minimum instrument firmware is required for HW 3.4 (512kB version),
see the table below.

Service Software In SERIS the different variants can be identified via hardware version.

SATEL Radio The SATEL radio firmware to be used is different for both variants of M3-TR9.
Firmware M3-TR9 Hardware variant SATEL firmware
1.3 / 1.4 (1024kB) 07.38.2.5.1.4
3.4 (512kB) 07.67.3.6.0.8

Instrument Firmware For GS18 and iCG70 both radio firmware versions are included in the firmware
package. Depending on the installed variant, the respective radio firmware will

Firmware downgrade on GS Sensors with Viva Firmware v7.50 or

Captivate Firmware v3.50

Introduction After downgrading GS Sensors with Viva Firmware v7.50 or Captivate Firmware
v3.50 to any lower version the mapping of the internal phone modem and the
internal radio module gets lost. Neither a reset nor a firmware update can fix the
problem. Please perform following described procedure below to solve this issue.

Problem in  For users: No problems if the affected antenna gets connected with a controller.
practical use  For service technicians: SERIS doesn't recognize the internal phone modem and
the internal radio during the readout and/or the testing of these modules.

E-mail: service.support@leica-geosystems.com 1/2 http://service.leica-geosystems.com

How to fix the  For users: The modules will be mapped automatically as soon as they get
problem selected in the configuration of a controller. Nothing special to do.
 For service technicians: Connect instrument to SERIS, go to "Adjust"  "Set
Values", run "Set Cellular Mobile Type " and "Set Radio Type" to map the
modules again.

Check Connect instrument to SERIS, go to "Instrument Software" and perform an

Initial readout with the steps "Get Radio Information" and "Get Phone Information".

ME4 tracking issue

Introduction On August 4, 2018, several receivers with ME4 measurement engine with ME
firmware dated from 2009 – 2011 (version 4.00x) stopped to track satellites.
Resetting the ME and/or the SystemRAM does not resolve this issue, a new
ME4 firmware version v6.112 or higher must be loaded.

However, some GNSS receivers lost the communication to the ME and cannot
be updated. In this case, the ME must be recovered in a Service department
using the ME firmware loading fixture art. no. 832856. Please refer to Service
News 03-2017 for details about the fixture.

Affected The following Instruments/Series can be affected regarding the ME4 tracking
Instruments issue:
GX1200 series

Recover Process Do the following procedure if the GNSS receivers lost the communication to
the ME:
1. Install the ME4 into the ME firmware loading fixture
2. Start the Winload program
3. Load the “ClearNVRAM.hex” via Winload
4. Load the “ME4_6112.hex” file via Winload

For detailed information regarding Winload and ME firmware loading

fixture, refer to Service News 03-2017 and the WinLoadQuickGuide.

 After loading firmware v6.112 the ME must be tested by tracking satellites of all
supported constellations until all almanacs have been updated.

ME Firmware Loading Fixture (832856)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Introduction We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new test tool for the Measurement
Engines (ME). We offer the "ME Firmware Loading Fixture" (832856) as a stand-alone
test setup. This tool is for resetting, loading and testing of Measurement Engines.

Leica Geosystems AG

E-mail: service.support@leica-geosystems.com 1/2 http://service.leica-geosystems.com

Software The software "WinLoadPackage.exe" will be available for downloading on our Service
Website. This package includes:
- WinLoad.exe
- Folder with "WinLoad_FW_files"
- WinLoadQuickGuide.pdf
- Maja.exe

All information on installing and handling this fixture can be found in the manual
"WinLoadQuickGuide.pdf". The default installation path should be
"C:\Service\WinLoad". There you will find the manual.

Please check the website regularly for newer versions!

Service For service technicians trained on anyone of the GNSS products no additional training
training will be required

Optional During testing it is necessary to check the voltage out of the ME. Therefore you can use
Hardware the Antenna Signal Tester (749448) which you already have for all other GNSS test
setups.

We recommend to use the setup illustrated below in combination with the Antenna
Signal Tester (749448). With this tool it is not necessary to switch between the antenna
cable and the Antenna Signal Tester all the time. An easier handling with less errors is
guaranteed.

Sparepart introduction for Cookie Can Setup

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Introduction With the current cookie-can Setup it is possible to create a voltage differential
when connecting directly to an instruments Antenna port. This will permanently
damage the ME, and it will have to be exchanged. This situation can also occur
with instruments with 2 MEs (e.g. iCG82)

Spare part To counter this issue a DC-blocker has to be placed between the splitter and
the Cookie-Can. The part number is :

850906 – DC Blocker

Attached to this service news, there is an overview of where the DC Blocker is

located and how the whole cookie can setup should look like.

Changes to VIVA Processorboards

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Reason We would like to inform, that for several processor boards there has been a
hardware change. Therefore, we had to create new article numbers.
It needs to be considered, that the new boards require a specific higher
firmware version, which needs to be in line with the maintenance license
installed on the equipment.
Please find the details below.

Actions for Service The overview table on the next page explains the different board versions.
Centres
Please note, NEW boards only can be used with firmware version V5.05 or
higher! They cannot be downgraded!
In order to ensure the board’s stock availability we strongly request you to:
 use a NEW version processor board in case you have a repair unit
with FW V5.05 or higher
 consequently return defect boards via the eSpareBack process

* Note:
In future, new boards might have higher board indexes as listed in the table.

Not Affected Boards Not affected are the following boards. They can be used with any firmware
version (restricted by maintenance license).
 99 833614 TS16 Application board
 99 807394 TS/TM/MS50 Processor board
 99 820842 iCON iCx60 Processor board
 99 810981 Processor board GS14 - 3.75G
 99 810982 Processor board GS14 - 3.75G (USA / CAN)

Expired Maintenance In the moment we try to ensure the availability of both board versions.
License
In case, the old version would be not available anymore, the new version has to
be used.
It may occur, the maintenance license on the equipment does not support the
firmware V5.05. A purchase of a CCP (Customer Care Package incl. SW

Communication issue between Mainboard and ME4 (Novatel format)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Introduction With service news 21-2014 we informed you about the new SmartWorx version
5.50. The corresponding firmware for ME4 and OEM615 is 6.403.

Communication Once the latest firmware 6.403 is installed to the ME4/OEM615 they will only be
protocol able to communicate using the Novatel protocol.
Only mainboards with SmartWorx 5.50 (or higher) can communicate with the
Novatel protocol, but also with the LB2 protocol.
All older ME4/OEM615 firmwares (<6.403) can only communicate with the LB2
protocol.

Communication A mainboard with SmartWorx version lower than 5.50 cannot communicate with
issue a measurement engine with version 6.403.

Possible causes of 1.) After exchanging the mainboard on a sensor that had SmartWorx 5.50
fault installed, there is no more communication between the mainboard and
the ME4/OEM615. The reason for this is that exchange boards always
have a SmartWorx version lower than 5.50 preinstalled.

2.) Interruption during firmware upgrade to SmartWorx 5.50

->ME4/OEM615 is already in Novatel format but the mainboard isn’t.

In both cases it’s no more possible to load GS.fw or GS_FW+WinCe to the

sensor.

Leica Geosystems AG
Heinrich-Wild-Strasse
CH-9435 Heerbrugg
Switzerland

E-mail: service.support@leica-geosystems.com 1/2 http://service.leica-geosystems.com

Solution We introduce a service firmware for mainboard only (without ME4/OEM615)
to make an upgrade possible which is independent from the ME4/OEM615
communications protocol.

Examples of filenames:
For GS10/15: GS+WinCE_woME_EN.fw
For GS14: GS14+WinCE_woME_EN.fw
For GS25: GS25+WinCE_woME_EN.fw

These files are provided on our service website from now on.
Once the service firmware is installed it’s necessary to load the full SmartWorx
firmware package GS...FW+WinCE…fw 5.50 (or higher) again.

Leica SmartWorx Viva v5.50 update

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Introduction With the release of Leica SmartWorx Viva v5.50 there will be two new
measurement engine firmware versions introduced as well. Due to this update
there are a few points that have to be taken into account when using Leica
SmartWorx Viva v5.50. This firmware update will be available for all Viva GS,
CS and smart antennas using Leica SmartWorx Viva.

New measurement There will be two new versions of the measurement engine firmware, version
engine Firmware 6.403 and 6.402 (ME4 and OEM 615). The main difference is the
communication protocol (Novatel / LB2) that is understood by each one :

6.403 = Novatel (Compatible with Leica SmartWorx Viva >v5.50)

6.402 = Novatel + LB2 (Compatible with all Leica SmartWorx Viva versions)

For example if a measurement engine with 6.403 is mounted into a GS15 with
Leica SmartWorx Viva version <v5.50 there will be no communication with the
measurement engine. Only Leica SmartWorx Viva v5.50 and higher can
communicate with measurement engines set on the Novatel format.

 The firmware version 6.403 cannot be installed on instruments with Leica

SmartWorx Viva version lower than v5.50.

Update to When updating to Leica SmartWorx Viva v5.50 the software package will
SmartWorx v5.50 automatically update the measurement engines firmware to 6.403 as well. Leica
SmartWorx Viva v5.50 will understand both Novatel and LB2 formats. Attached
to this service news there is a FAQ with possible situations that could occur
when dealing with Leica SmartWorx Viva v5.50 and newer measurement engine
firmware.

Antenna element GS14 – New Revision

Introduction The design of existing antenna element for GS15 and iCG60 GNSS receiver
has been changed. The reason for this change is the market introduction of new
GS14 GNSS receiver. Essentially, the new revision consists of a small design
change of the mounting holes for GS14 GNSS receiver.

Affected parts All GS14, GS15 and iCG60 instruments which are produced since December
2012 are equipped with new antenna elements (Revision Index 4).

• 766935 Antenna element

Solution Antenna elements with revision index 3 on service stock levels can be only
used for GS15 and iCG60 instruments.
For GS14 GNSS receiver the new antenna element with revision index 4 must
be used. In case of repair verify that the correct version will be assembled.
The new antenna elements (Rev 4) are fully backward compatible and can be
used instead of old antenna elements (Rev 3) for GS14, GS15 and iCG60
instruments.

Rectified instruction The wrong instruction will be rectified within the next revision of the Service
Manual as follows:

The HF cable for the internal GSM antenna has to be laid with a “loop”.
Then, the HF cable for the UHF antenna ! has to be laid behind this loop.

Measures to take in Lay both HF cables for GSM und UHF according to this Service News and not
Service Centers to the description in the Service Manual (Edition 11/09) when reassembling a
GS15 SmartAntenna.
Please note, the HF cables are laid correctly on all GS15 SmartAntennas!

6.1.4 Data Storage Concept

Description

Data (Leica GNSS raw data and RINEX data) can be recorded on the micro SD
card.

Memory Device

Memory device Description

micro SD card All GS GNSS instruments have a micro SD card slot fitted
as standard. A micro SD card can be inserted and
removed.
Available capacity: 1 GB.

 While other micro SD cards can be used, Leica Geosys-

tems recommends to only use Leica micro SD cards and is
not responsible for data loss or any other error that can
occur while using a non-Leica micro SD card.

 Unplugging cables or removing the micro SD card during the

measurement can cause loss of data. Only remove the micro SD
card or unplug cables when the GS GNSS instrument is switched
off.

 Micro SD cards can directly be used in an OMNI drive as supplied

by Leica Geosystems. Other PC card drives can require an
adaptor.
