Thalassemia
Thalassemia is an inherited (i.e., passed from parents to children through genes) blood disorder
caused when the body doesn't make enough of a protein called hemoglobin, an important part of
red blood cells.
Types
When we searched about thalassemia, we found that there are two types of it. Alpha or beta.
Alpha thalassemia
Alpha thalassemia is the condition where there is a reduced formation of alpha polypeptide
chains because of an absence of alpha genes.
Cause
The disorder is hereditary and is caused by a genetic mutation in the alpha genes, which are in
charge of producing alpha polypeptide chains. This syndrome is more frequent in Southeast
Asians, Africans, and individuals from the Mediterranean areas of Cyprus and Greece.
Beta thalassemia
The synthesis of beta polypeptide chains is diminished in beta thalassemia due to abnormalities
in the beta globin genes on chromosome 11. There are two forms of beta thalassemia; the first
causes only partial loss of function. This is known as beta + thalassemia. The other form is beta 0
thalassemia, which causes full loss of function. This is inherited and is the result of a genetic
alteration (mutation) in the beta globin genes.

Cause
People of Southeast Asian, African, or Mediterranean origin are more likely to have beta
thalassemia. If a person carries the mutation, genetic testing and haemoglobin testing can reveal
it.
Treatment
Treatment may require blood transfusions, and chelation therapy to remove excess iron due to
the transfusions, and in some cases, spleen removal is needed.
Objective
Our main objective is to save the lives of thalassemia patients. That's why we are collecting
blood. The KPI of our group is 40 bottles of blood. The key results of our project is every
thalassemia patients required blood approximately every 2 to 5 weeks.
Foundation
We got a lot of welfares from which we have chosen two. FATMID Foundation or Destak
Welfare Foundation.
FATMID FOUNDATION
Fatimid Foundation is the largest blood transfusion service in the NGO sector in Pakistan
providing fully screened healthy blood and blood products each month to thousands of patients
suffering from blood disorders like Thalassemia, Hemophilia and Von Willebrand diseases,
through its centers in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar,
Khairpur and Larkana.
Benefits
Every 2 seconds someone in the world needs a blood transfusion. Basically the benefits of
donating blood according to our perspective are really very helpful for the society and these
benefits are:
Helping people that are injured in an accident and are not financially stable, the patients that are
undergoing cancer or the surgeries for cancer such as thalassemia.

Strategy
Our strategy for this project was to meet our kpi which is our 40 blood bottles. By which we can
save some human lives. Accomplish this target and we took the help of our friends and
acquaintances to achieve this target. We have chosen FATMID Foundation for this work i.e.
blood donation. The main and basic strategy that we will follow while doing this will be
spreading awareness about thalassemia or about other common blood related diseases. Spreading
awareness may cause a tension across people because but at the same point they will rush to the
hospital for their checkup which is the positive point. Other main strategy is also to motivate
people.
