APPROACHES AND TECHNIQUES IN ENGLISH TEACHING

DESCRIPTION.
This is a theorical-practicum course in which students are meant to stablish a
relationship between the theory of the methodological approaches that are currently
working to teach-learn a second language. As well as placing into practice the different
methods available to reach this objective.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE.
This course intends the study of different approaches, its methodological principles; as
well as, the realization of various techniques that are required to face the scenario of a
specific class.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES.
Participants from this course will be able of:
1. Elaborate a bibliographic revision that will allow the identification and practice
of at least four of the different approaches for the learning of a second language
with all its characteristics.
2. Identify different techniques with its approaches.
3. Place into practice a selected approach so that it can be used in the application of
different techniques according to the scenario that will be.
4. Provide a follow up on the development of the practicum process in a reflexive
action which will allow the improvement on the results obtained from this
reflection.
5. Enrich the own teaching experience when interchanging, debating and
discussing different educational scenarios with other participants

THEMATIC CONTENTS.
1. Traditional approach towards “oral methods” (1960-80).
2. Communicative approach.
3. Variables in the “integrated language”.
4. The methodological eclecticism

METHODOLOGICAL PROCEDURE.

The course is characterized by a bibliographic review in which students have a direct


role guided by the teacher and with partial help regarding material, articles and
documents that facilitate the study.
An essential part of the course comprises classroom demonstrations for class analysis,
as well as direct practice in a class scenario selected for this purpose.
A final document based on the experience will be the outcome of the course and will be
based on the analysis, reflection and discussion of the demonstrations, presentations and
practice.

ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION & EVALUATION

1. Oral Presentation – 20%


- It consists on the presentation of a topic already stablished by the professor.
- Every group must prepare an interactive demonstration of the topic, as well
as activities related to the topic or topics.
- The evaluation will be individually but, there will be a group evaluation.
- Every group must last, at least, 30 minutes presenting (including the activity
or activities).
- Part of the group evaluation consists on delivering a summary of the topic
presented to every classmate.

2. Micro teaching – 30%


- In the same groups, students have to choose a topic from the MEP syllabus,
develop a micro teaching that includes:
o Lesson plan.
o Warm up activities, while activities and closing activities.
o You must include the method or approach that was used during the
oral presentation.
- Evaluation will be in groups. It means all members of the group must be
ready to present, bust only one person will present, the day of the
presentation, the professor will choose the student who will be in charge of
the micro teaching.
- Every presenter will have 40 minutes to develop the mini class.
- Students must send a copy of the lesson plan to the professor and classmates
before the presentation.

3. Class Participation – 10%


- Active participation in class.
- Ask and respond to questions.
- Participate in the activities in an active way.

4. Oral Assessment – 5%
- It is a 5 minutes video every student has to record in the first session.
- Students are allowed to use Power Point, You Tube, their cellphones, or any
other free or paid app they prefer.

5. Class Assessment – 35%


- It refers to an oral assessment the professor plans to make sure students paid
attention and understood the topic or topics presented by their classmates.
- Every class will have a different assessment with a communicative approach.
- Every student will have to elaborate different tasks (conceptual maps,
summaries, mind maps, and any other techniques proposed by the professor),
and record videos giving their point of view and showing the technique.
