Background of the Study

Composing music is a powerful tool of humanity that can improve one’s own life
as well as the lives of others. Creating a song provides a sense of pride and
accomplishment, as the song sprung out of the songwriter’s mind into a new entity of its
own. Music composition requires intense focus, improving ability to concentrate and
keeping mind sharp. Also, it can evoke powerful emotions in a composer yet also be a
relaxing activity. Creating music offers oneself and others an immortal blueprint of
identity that they might relate to. Likewise, composing music deals with diverse facets of
human consciousness, including individual philosophy, psychology, spirituality, inner
focus, fiery outlook, socio-politico-economic subscription, and/or mere idiosyncratic
proclivity. It also speaks to the valleys as well as the peaks of the human condition
(Holtz, 2017).

 The various, connected musical segments establish a logical order, an emotional

progression into one’s minds. Thus, original music offers a sparking blueprint of
songwriter partial identity – of who he is or for whom the song composed be dedicated.
This sense of knowing one’s self is imperative to one’s relationship with larger, life
schematics. It provides the “how” that partially answers the “why” (Mosh, 2021).
Panaghoy is a lament of people in all walks of life when the world seemed to
collapse due to the Covid‐19 pandemic in 2020. According to Cueva (2021), music was
employed to promote positivity and strength among citizens and communities,
especially during worldwide lockdowns. Because the general context of the pandemic
was saturated with anxiety, uncertainty, and fear (Castilla, et. al, 2021). As people
attempted to adapt to the so‐called “new normal,” a large number of sentiments were
shared in the news, on social networks. The effects of the virus were not limited to the
symptoms of disease and illness. The situation also evoked uncertainty and fear
(González‐Sanguino et al., 2020; Ozamiz‐Etxebarria et al., 2020), which made the crisis
even deeper and altered peoples’ lives in both their individual and social spheres. Music
practices emerge during the pandemic, evoking the idea that music had been a source
of optimism and solidarity throughout the crisis.
Within this context, the researchers have chosen a study about panaghoy which is
an original song composition reflecting the legacy of Oca Garin in times of Covid -19
pandemic showcasing Guimbal drum and Gabbang.
The research input of the study was conceptual literature on Song Composition, Oca
Garin’s Biography, and facts about Covid-19 Pandemic. In gathering information,
interview about the biography and legacy of the late Oca Garin , library method and
surfing in the internet will be used. The output of the study is the original song
composition reflecting the legacy of Oca Garin showcasing Guimbal drum and
Gabbang.
