Rhythmic Gymnastics: Sport or Art?

Deeply rooted in ballet and modern dance,
Rhythmic Gymnastics is said to be “the juncture of
sport and art” as it combines different artforms in
an athletic performance (Gymnasticsnz.com, n.d.).
Wascana RG Club (2020) even describes it “as the
perfect combination of arts and sports in which one
or group of gymnasts perform some skillful
manipulation of gymnastics apparatus” such as
ribbon, clubs, ball, hoop and rope.

In this module we will focus on and how these

apparatuses are key to a successful routine as we
learn more about Rhythmic Gymnastics.

Apparatus: The Key Difference
Amy Van Deusen (2018) emphasizes that “in rhythmic gymnastics, the athletes perform with
equipment instead of on equipment” unlike in Artistic Gymnastics. Accordingly, Rhythmic
“Gymnasts perform jumps, tosses, leaps and other moves with different types of apparatus,
and are judged much more on their grace, dance ability, and coordination than their power or
tumbling prowess” as that in other disciplines.

Though there may be a lot of facets that sets Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) apart from other
disciplines however, apparatus remains to be chief marker as discussed in the following
websites and videos:

So far, we’ve learned the significance of the apparatus in Rhythmic Gymnastics, now let’s find
out more about each apparatus individually

Ribbon
Possibly the most prominent Rhythmic Gymnastics apparatus, comprised of a handle (known as
"stick" usually 50-60 cm long and 1 cm wide), a ribbon and attachment (Wikipedia, 2020). H. M.
Alumia (2014, pp. slides 24-27) provided these vital apparatus specs in a slideshare
presentation:

BALL

(Alumia, 2014, slide 24)

CLUBS

(Alumia, 2014, slide 27)

HOOP

(Alumia, 2014, slide 25)

ROPE

In a web article Amy Van Deusen (2018) notes that “the rope is made out of hemp or synthetic
material, and is proportional to the size of the gymnast”. Furthermore, in a separate slideshare
presentation (Maribel1960, 2013)outlined how to determine the rope length:

Activity 2
Taking note of the apparatus standard sizes indicated above, (1.) create your own improvised
Rhythmic Gymnastics apparatuses using materials that you can find at home. Then, either (2.)(a.)
write a step by step tutorial or (b.) make a video tutorial about it. Just choose among a or b.

Do your best to be creative in choosing materials that are accessible to you and try to conform
to the standard sizes noted above, as much possible.

You may publish your write-ups in Wordpress or upload your videos on any online platform that
you prefer or just send your write-ups/ video clip/ uploaded links to our FB messenger group.
