HK-51 Benchtop Sodium Meter INTRODUCTION

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Brief introduction

HK-51 Benchtop Sodium Meter is consisted of the meter, sodium electrode, reference electrode, ATC
temperature electrode and the electrode holder. It adopts the high sensible electrode system to make
sure the stability and accuracy of sodium measurement.
The meter has one temperature input channel. When automatic temperature compensation is needed,
the sample temperature can be measured by a Pt1000 thermometer, otherwise manual temperature
compensation will replace the automatic temperature compensation

1.2 Working principle

The effect of the sodium concentration variation to the electric potential of the sodium electrode can be
depicted by the Nernst equation:
RT
E = E 0 + 2.3 lg a Na +
nF
where:
E — The electric potential generated by the sodium electrode, mV;

a Na +
E0 —The electric protential of the electrode when is 1mol/L, mV;:
-1 -1
R — Ideal gas constant; 8.314JK mol ;
T — Absolute temperature of the sample water, K;
F — Faraday constant, 9.649×104C·mol-1
n — The electron number participating the reaction, for sodium ion it is +1;
a Na +
— The activity of the sodium ion in the solution, mol/L.

1
HK-51 Benchtop Sodium Meter INTRODUCTION

The above equation had indicated that, the measured electric potential will variate with the variation of
the temperature and the related ion concentration. In order to eliminate the errors caused by the water
temperature variation, HK-51 sodium meter will amend the temperature compensation value timely
according to the temperature measured by the ATC temperature electrode.

From the Nernst equation we can see that, at the temperature of 25℃, the theoretical response value
of the selected sodium electrode to the 10 times of ion concentration is 59.16mV, which is called
electrode slope (S). However, most of electrodes will not manifest as theoretical slope. So it is
necessary to calibrate the instrument to determine the actual slope of the electrode. In the actual
application, we calculate out the real slope value and the E0 of the electrode by using two kinds of
standard solution.

When the concentration of sodium ion is in a low level, the existence of the hydrogen ion will cause
magnificent interference. In order to eliminate this interference, basifier should be added in the sample
water and making the pH value be increased up to over 10.5.

5.2 Calibration (automatic stable-judgment function ENABLED)

After the meter is normal operation, it is necessary to perform the calibrations, including:
• Na+ standard solution calibration
• Sample calibration;
• Temperature calibration;
• Electric calibration
Among which, the Temp Cal and Electric Cal are factory calibrated, there is no need to recalibrate. In
order to ensure the accurate and reliable measurement, Na+ standard solution calibration (2-points Cal)
is necessary prior to the initial operation.

5.2.1 Na+ Standard Solution Calibration

Na+ standard solution calibration is based on the usage of a known pNa value standard solution. 1-point
or 2-points calibration is available, among which, 1-point calibration is to correct the curves stored in
the memory, while 2-points calibration is to create a curve for mV voltage values to pNa values.
During normal measurements, the meter results the measured mV voltage values in accordance with
the curves stored in the memory. And then it is necessary to perform temperature compensation, and
display the pNa value at 25℃.

CAUTION
2-points calibration is required for the initial operation, electrodes replacement and
long-term out of operation.

Absorb pNa4 standard solution, by using the 1st grade reagent water and dilute to 10 times volume and
then get pNa5 standard solution.

pNa6 standard solution (10-6mol/L) (23μg/L)

Absorb pNa5 standard solution, by using the 1st grade reagent water and dilute to 10 times volume
and then get pNa6 standard solution.

With the same method, pNa7 (2.3μg/L) standard solution can be prepared according to actual use.

NOTE: Actually the 1st grade reagent water for preparing the standard solution is not really
contain no Na+, therefore, when the concentration is lower than 2.3μg/L(pNa7), the Na+
contained in the water should be deducted. When prepare for 2.3μg/L (pNa6) standard solution
or concentration below it, we should use plastic or quartz flask, all the standard solutions
should be stored in polythene plastic container to prevent any pollution.
