Case Study Assignment

Grading: 15%

DUE DATE: Dec 7, 2022

A. Conduct research and identify a case that pertains to an individual who has been
wrongfully incarcerated in Canada. Detail the facts pertaining to the case and what
went wrong. Explain how the investigation could have unfolded differently and how
this issue came to light.

B. Many have argued that Canada’s prisons are becoming “warehouses for the
mentally ill” and that related illnesses (and issues) are not being managed properly
at the institutional level (perhaps lack of staff training for example, among other
issues). One of the more recent examples in the media is the case of Ashley Smith.

For both selection A and B complete the following:

i)

Review the case details (via documentary clips, news articles and other relevant academic
sources). Also review other examples around the country and begin to formulate a professional
opinion regarding this issue.

ii)

Think from a risk management approach. Explain how the Public Prosecution
Service/Police/Correction Institution handled the issue.

Consider such issues as safety and security. Also, consider the fundamental Charter Rights and
freedoms

iii) From a risk management perspective, what would be your recommendation(s) to improve the
system so that this type of situation does not occur again.
