+ 1,154 + 124 + 9,223 + 4, 544
+ 45

B. Parts of the Addition

b. Developmental Activities

1. MOTIVATION
- PROBLEM
It was harvest season for Lola Anna’s mango farm. Last week, the men
harvested 4,563 mangoes (MEN), while the women collected 2,425 mangoes
(WOMEN). Yesterday, the children joined the workers in harvesting and
gathered 1,589 mangoes (CHILDREN)
What is the total number of mangoes? What is the total number of mangoes
that both women and men gathered? About how many mangoes did both
women ang children collect altogether?

1. What is the total number of mangoes?

4,563 + 2,425 + 1,589 = 8,577

2. What is the total number of mangoes that both women and men
gathered?
4,563 + 2,425 = 6,988

3. How many mangoes did both women and children collect altogether?
2,425 + 1,589 = 4,014

2. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON

- Addition is one of the four fundamental mathematical operations. An
addition sentence is made up to addends and the sum.
- The properties of addition are the Identity Property, Commutative Property,
and Associative Property.
A. Identity Property - this property states that any number added to zero is
equivalent to the given number itself. Remember, identity is addition is equal
to the number itself.

- Adding 0 to a number doesn’t change a number.

Example:
4,563 + 2,425 + 0 = 6,988
10 + 0 = 10
0 + 234 = 234
B. Commutative Property - This states that whatever the order of the
addends is, the sum still the same.
- You can change the order of addends.
Example:
4,563 + 2,425 = 2,425 + 4,563
6,988 = 6,988

245 + 312 = 312 + 245

557 = 557

2,241 + 1,322 + 1,322 + 2,241

3,563 = 3,563
C. Associative Property - This property tells that whatever the grouping of
the addends may be, the sum will stay the same.
- You can change the grouping of addends.
Example:
Given:
Men - 4,563 mangoes
Women - 2,000 mangoes + 425 mangoes
Solution:

4,563 + (2,000 +425) = (4,563 + 2,000) + 425

6,988 = 6,988
Example:
Given:
Men - 10 apples + 40 apples
Women - 50 apples

Solution: (10 + 40) + 50 = 10 + (40 + 50)

100 = 100
3. APPLICATION
Show examples of properties of addition.
Individual Performance
A. Direction: Raise your signboards. Raise IP if Identity Property, CP if
Commutative Property and AP if Associative Property.

1. 28 + 35 = 35 + 28 CP
2. (56 + 34) + 15 = 56 + (34 +15) AP
3. 100 + 0 IP
4. 71 + 4 = 4 +71 CP
5. 20 + (25 + 31) = (20 + 25) + 31 AP

c. Closure Activity
Matching Type: Match Column A with Column B.
A. B.
1. 1,235 + 1,900 + 0
2. 783 + (4 + 5) = (783 + 4) + 5 A. Identity Property
3. 98,009 + 9 = 9 +98,009 B. Associative Property
4. 10, 000 + 0 = 10, 000 C. Commutative Property
5. (435 +126) + 7 = 435 + (126 + 7)

B. Identify the following properties of addition

____________________1. This property tells that whatever the grouping of the addends
may be, the sum will stay the same.
____________________2. This property states that any number added to zero is
equivalent to the given number itself.
____________________3. This states that whatever the order of the addends is, the sum
still the same.
IV. EVALUATION
Write IP for Identity Property, CP for Commutative Property, and AP for Associative
Property.

1. 141 + 5 = 5 + 141
The property used is __________ CP 2.
8 + (30 + 17) = (8 + 30) + 17
The property used is __________ AP
3. 19, 000 + 0 = 19, 000
The property used is __________ IP
4. 2,893 + 15 = 15 + 2.983
The property used is __________ CP
5. 0 + 17,745 = 17, 745
The property used is _________ IP

V. ASSIGNMENT
A. Fill in the missing blanks to satisfy the property of addition used.
1. 12 + (_3_ + 15) = (12 + 3) + 15 Associative Property
2. 48 + __0_ = 48 Identity Property

3. 25 + 57 = 57 + _25__ Commutative Property

4. 0 + _37__ = 37 Identity Property

5. 26 + 24 = _24__ + 26 Commutative Property
