What do you eat for breakfast? What do you eat for breakfast?
I don’t eat much in the morning – I have a cup A lot! Fried eggs on toast with beans or
of coffee (essential!) and a small bowl of avocado, a bowl of cereal or yogurt, a fruit
muesli. At the weekend, I have a croissant. salad and a pot of tea to go with it!
What about lunch and dinner? What about lunch and dinner?
I’m vegetarian so I have a cheese or hummus I have a smaller lunch. Maybe a wrap or a
sandwich for lunch. Or maybe a falafel couscous salad. For dinner I have grilled meat
sandwich if I eat out. Then for dinner it’s pasta or fish with chips and vegetables. Then ice
or a veg curry with rice. cream or cheesecake for dessert. Yum!

A, an and the

We use the articles a and an with singular nouns.


We use a with nouns that start with consonant sounds (/b/, /d/, /f/ etc.)
and an with nouns that start with vowel sounds (/e/, /æ/, /ɒ/):

A coffee. An orange juice.


/k/ /ɒ/

the is also an article but is used in a different way:

a, an Indefinite, for nonspecific things or people


the Definite, for specific things or people

I’ll have a pizza. (Any pizza that you make, not a specific one.)
The pizza looks good. (The specific pizza I’m looking at, not any other pizza.)

We add -s to make regular plural nouns:

When a noun ends in -ch/-sh/-s/-x we add -es:

When a noun ends in -y we add -ies:

a country two countries


/z/ /z/

Some plurals are irregular:
