The original way to make coffee was in a jug,
similar to making tea- Metal percolators
have been used lor somc time but the coffee
tends to be too bitrer for some tastes.
Eiectric percolators and filter coffee makcrs
now do the whole job automarically and, bv
controlling each stage, give a good-

The water capaciry depends on the model

least one type has this on the outside in the

it is not metal, or of heat-resistant plastic,

Care and maintenance
Electric percolators and filter coffee makers
should be maintained in accordance wiü
manufacturers' instructions and, provided
üey are followed, maintenance should be
minimal. Howeve¡ the following
recommendations should be observed:
"' Always disconnect the appliance before
cleaning.
" Unless the :nanufacturer gives instructions
to the contrary, never immerse the
appüance in water, alüough the jug of a
filter coffee machine may be washed in üe
usual way.
'" Should üe appüance be used in a very hard
water area, a build-up of scale may occur
and üis should be removed periodically.
Use only the meüod recommended by the
manufacturer.
Sal-ety
Always buy a model that carries the BEAB
label of the British Electrotechnical
Approvals Board. This means rhar ir has
been rype tested and approved for electrical
safety in accordance with the appropriate
British Standard.
