Natural Protected Areas
We humans, has a global society, need resources from our environment, that’s why there are so
many industries related to production and development of technology and comfort to solve our
day-to-day problems and make our lives easier, this hasn’t change at all. Since many years ago,
these industries, a top 5 for example “energy, transport, agriculture, fashion, food retail”
(Omondi, 2021), used to exploit commodities exceedingly, without analyzing the impact of this
activities in the environment, therefore, various types of species became in danger of extinction
or completely disappeared; pollution in soil, water, and air increased, and our bodies started to
take a toll too.
For all previously mentioned, many governments started to act. In Peru, an effort was made to
preserve and protect natural areas to ensure a sustainable development. Our country currently
has 76 protected areas that cover more than 18 million hectares or 14 percent of the national
territory. “These include national parks, national reserves, national sanctuaries, historical
sanctuaries, protected rain forests, hunting areas, community reserves and reserved areas.”
(Discover Perú, 2010).
Preserving Natural Protected Areas is a hard task, that’s why The World Bank (2021) mention 4
key activities to accomplish this objective, the first one is the “Development of a multi-partner,
public-private initiative for long-term financial sustainability of the Natural Protected Areas”, the
second one is “Diversification of sources to increase NPA financing”, then we have
“Implementation of Patrimonio Natural del Perú - PdP - Action Plan Measures to consolidate and
improve the effective management of Amazon NPAs” and the last one is “Project Coordination,
Management, Monitoring and Evaluation”.
However, the NPA, unexpectedly present a clear problem in the Peruvian society, even thou they
have the mission to protect biodiversity and fight the climate crisis, NPA are affecting negatively
the culture and lifestyles of local communities, in particular indigenous people. Green initiatives
present some complications “like land dispossession, less access to forest resources to carry on
ancestral activities, risks to food security and to indigenous livelihoods” (Paredes and Kaulard,
2020).
To conclude, NPA were stablished to preserve the environment, but they have unexpected
disadvantages, that’s why we can just rely on them. So, us, as individuals, must respect and take
care of nature in all forms, this includes every variety of life and inert elements that are part of
the environment. Natural Protected Areas are just and example of effort in a specific way, that’s
why change has to start by our own actions too. This is not only my opinion, but many scientists
too. To finallize, I must state the world would change if we, has a global society, take full
responsibility for our actions.
