Uniting for the Arts

On March 29th, 2019, AP Studio Art and Photography 2 classes hosted the eighth annual Chalk
Day. Each year, Chalk Day takes place in March, corresponding with Youth Art Month.
Although much of the planning and effort occurred behind the scenes, Chalk Day students and
support staff united from a variety of classes to produce this celebratory event.

“Our students really embrace the LHS arts in many forms, and our teachers are not only
excellent at their craft, but inspire students to take risks in their work,” Ms. Amanda Grady said.

Students in the two art classes facilitated Chalk Day, which involved mapping our hundreds of
squares before school started and monitoring classes throughout the day.

“We set up and gridded all the squares on the concrete, which took over an hour,” said Emma
Stoll (11).

Additionally, students taking Photography 2 utilized their skills as photographers to capture the
moments of Chalk Day.

“Applying the skills we learned from class into an actual event allowed us to use our talents for
real-world causes,” Raina Bryant (12) said.

Also vital to the success of Chalk Day, staff members and their students engaged in the event by
creating original designs and judging the final products.

“I enjoyed judging the artwork because I was able to see students’ creativity and enthusiasm
displayed through their work,” Mr. Brandon Baskett said.

With the help of these individuals, Ms. Candace Cannon oversaw the entire process, spreading
the word, preparing the materials, and finally, running the event itself. Without the help of
Cannon and volunteers, Chalk Day would not have taken place.

“Chalk Day takes a tremendous amount of planning. I am so proud and grateful for all the work
students accomplished together for the 8th annual Chalk Day,” Cannon said.
