Double the Trouble

Marching Band students take on multiple roles for their show

Inspired by the composition "Peter and the Wolf," the Cat Band developed their show "The
Hunt." The performance allowed several band members to adopt multiple roles.

“I loved the 'Peter and the Wolf' theme and the music. We really brought the show to life
performing together," Sean Soto (11) said.

At the end of the first movement, John Lee (12) stopped conducting to play a solo on clarinet. As
a soloist and drum major, Lee also had to dedicate time and effort to preparing for the show.

“For my clarinet solo, I used time after rehearsal or before school to go through it and practice,"
Lee said.

For the second movement, Charlie Winston (12) replaced Lee, requiring the two drum majors to
develop seamless transitions.

"After the first movement, I came down the ladder and played a solo. When the movement
ended, I took Charlie's spot," Lee said.

Following the second movement, Winston and five other band members who played instruments
for the first two movements joined the color guard section. Every member, including those with
multiple roles, were required to practice extensively.

"A lot of times, we had to leave the band rehearsal and go straight to guard rehearsal. It took a lot
of extra training time and practice, and I had to spend more time refining things because I had
more than one part," Winston said.

The combination of roles allowed students to explore multiple forms of performance and
contribute to several aspects of the show.

“I think that doing guard and band was a good way to branch out into other activities while still
doing band. 'Peter and the Wolf' allowed us to show the diversity of the band as well as our
individual talents," Shawn Freeman (11) said.
