ENGLISH CLASSES USE PROJECTS TO FURTHER
UNDERSTAND LITERATURE

After completing their study of various works from the

romantic genre, students in Ms. Dawne Houck's English 3
Honors classes were tasked with completing a project to
compare the elements of different styles of romanticism.
"We made a contrast between light and dark romantics. To

represent that, I used a white and black paper with quotes to

show the difference," Jones Kendall (10) said.
Classes were given creative freedom regarding the medium of
their product. Some students designed digital projects, while
others elected to create physical representations.
"I really enjoyed artistic projects because they allowed me
to sit and think and to express what I learned in the most
creative way possible," Audrey Butler (10) said.
As they began the project, students referenced many of the
works they studied throughout the unit. Using quotes from
various stories, students compared the two styles of
romanticism.
"I had to review all the essays and materials we had done
in class in order to figure out how the two styles contradicted
each other," Kendall said.
The project allowed students to better recognize the
distinctions between romantic sub-genres, which improved
their comprehension of course material.
"After looking at the lights and the darks of romanticism
side by side, I was able to understand a lot more about how

Butler said.
