Task: Find a narrative text and define its generic structure

“The Ugly Duckling”

A little duckling was terribly unhappy because he thought he was the ugliest amongst all his
brothers and sisters. They’d not play with him and titillated the poor ugly duckling. One day,
he saw his reflection within the water and cried, “Nobody likes me. I’m so ugly.” He decided
to go away from home and went far-off into the woods.
(The first paragraph here is the Orientation or also known as the introduction where it
introduces the character namely “The Ugly Duckling” here and on the first paragraph they
also started to introduces the problem of the story)
Deep within the forest, he saw a cottage in which there lived an old lady, her hen, and her cat.
The duckling stayed with them a few times however he was sad there and shortly left. Once
the winter set in, the poor duckling nearly froze to death. A peasant took him home to his
woman and kids. The poor duckling was afraid of the kids and escaped. The ugly duckling
spent the winter in a very marshy lake.
(The second paragraph here is the Complication or also known as the where the problem
arises. Here the problem already started raising as it tells about what causing the duckling
sad. Complication consists of three namely:
1. Natural Conflict
2. Social Conflict
3. Psychological Conflict
And the type of conflict here is Psychological Conflict and Social Conflict because it is a
conflict from the inside or themselves. And here the conflict is the duckling is sad because he
was ugly and was unhappy. And because of that too and he was shunned by his brother and
sister.
Finally, spring arrived. One day, the duckling saw a gorgeous swan swimming within the
lake and fell in love with her. Then again he remembered how everybody made fun of him
and he bent his head down in shame. Once he saw his own reflection in the water he was
astonied. He wasn’t an unsightly duckling any longer, but a handsome young swan! Now, he
knew why he had looked so completely different from his brothers and sisters. “They were
ducklings but I used to be a baby swan!” he said to himself. He married the gorgeous swan
and lived happily ever once.
(And now the last one here is none other than the Resolution or also known as Coda where
the conflict has calmed down and the story is coming to its end. This part shows the end of
the story whether it is a happy or an unhappy ending.)

An Embarrassing Experience
Going outside to play was what I always do in my childhood. But the same can’t be said
when I’m already reaching adulthood where I mostly spend my time inside the house due to
the pandemic situation too. I’m going to tell you my embarrassing experience when I was still
a few years old and I think it happens during primary school when I was 8 years old, when I
still used to play outside with my sister.
It happens on a sunny day, when I and my sister play a lot near the house. And at that time,
we played near a particular place and it was a sewer! I remember that I jumped around on the
sewer like you know trying parkour and stuff because I thought it was cool. And this activity
will lead to my downfall as I slipped and fell down to the sewer. Yikes! I was immediately
covered by the dirty sewer water and as people watched me, I started running back home.
After that moment, I promised and swear to myself to never go near a sewer or even play
beside a sewer ever again because I didn’t want to experience that embarrassing experience
ever again!
