Reading comprehension is simply the ability to understand what you read, or the
ability to understand written words. And understanding here means that you know the
context and get the message that was given by the author from the text. Strong reading
comprehension typically encompasses a variety of literacy skills needed to interpret
and identify meanings within a text.
Reading comprehension needs a reading skill, reading skills are abilities that pertain
to a person’s ability/capacity to read, comprehend, interpret and decode written
language and texts.
There are several elements or essential skills needed for reading comprehension:
Decoding = skill that relies on your abilities to perceive sounds you’ve heard
but never seen written out.
Fluency = the ability to speak or read fluently
Vocabulary = the ability to decode or determine the meaning of new words
that can influence your reading comprehension.
Inference = the ability to understand the general idea from the text.
Retention = basically summarizing and remembering what you read.
Reading helps to: learn new things, new vocabulary, helps you understand, gives you
new ideas and how to speak a language. And all of these things will be achieved if
you have good reading comprehension skills.
