While we breathe, we smell. The ability to smell is the
oldest human sense and still plays a key role in our lives
today. Freshly baked bread, a flower meadow, the sea

We have hundreds of olfactory receptors. These
receptors are enough to have a huge effect on our
lives. With every breath we take, we suck in smells,
and our brain then stores information about them.

THE LIMBIC SYSTEM
By smelling and breathing in fragrance molecules, certain
areas of your brain are activated. They activate a signal
that is immediately passed on to the limbic system via
the olfactory nerve. The moment the signal arrives in the
limbic system, feelings and emotions are triggered.
The limbic system is a section of the brain that serves the
processing of emotions. It is one of the most ancient parts
of our brain. It lies deep within the brain and contains
parts of all cerebral lobes. It is a heterogeneous group of
structures around the midbrain that is linked to the sense
of smell, emotions and behaviour.
The limbic system is home to the endocrine, vegetative
and psychological regulatory system. It processes stimuli
from both inside and outside the body. The limbic system
controls emotional behaviour and is our hub for feelings.
In addition, along with other parts of the brain, it is involved
in storing memories.
Mood-relevant neurochemicals are released via the limbic
system at lightning speed – these can have a powerful
effect on us, unfiltered by the cerebrum. The essential oils
trigger nerve and brain impulses. Emotional reactions are
a common effect! This then stimulates the production of
neurotransmitters and hormones. These are responsible
for emotions and instincts, but also for a healthy heart,

first described in the mid-17th
