Peer assessment refers to the arrangement for peers to consider the quality of learning outcomes

of others of similar status, it received attention of various studies due to the growing interest in

the student centered approach as learners need to be involved in the learning process even in the

assessment.1

We use peer learning at the University of People because it is an important reflection of our

learning. Peer assessment is a learning activity that challenges us to apply critical thinking as we

read and evaluate our peer’s assignment.

There are many benefits of peer assessment. First, it improves students’ understanding of

success criteria, help them to become more engaged in learning and develop their interpersonal

skills

Giving peer feedback in peer assessment can be challenging. Peer assessment may not be

objective. For example, some students may give their friends higher grades, while some tend to

give everyone the same mark. Some students may be unwilling to make a judgment about their

peers.

There are also a number of challenges of receiving feedback in peer assessment. First, some

students may not take feedback at all from their peers. Also, some students may find their

assessment beyond their expectation and they disagree with the given grade and they may get

emotionally stuck.

There are several strategies I will use to peer assess written and discussion assignments. I will

use checklists of criteria. Besides, I will use comparative assessment so that I can differentiate

what makes one answer ‘good’ and another ‘bad’. I will also try to provide specific and

constructive feedback to my peers so that they know how to improve their work.
