The suspension arm is a part of a car between the chassis and the wheel. For one of his new
cars, some engineers of a French car maker designed a new suspension arm. Two critical
zones have been identified on this mechanical component. In the following they will be
represented by two different loading paths.
The aim of this study is to find out which of these zones must be redesigned.
The load conditions 1 and 2 are defined by the time functions (in a frame attached to the
component):
11 (t ) = 280 sin t
Loading 1 22 (t ) = 56 sin t ( MPa )
12 (t ) = 140 sin t
1°) For the loading 1 and the loading 2, what are the linear relations between the three
components 11 , 22 and 12? Are the loads proportional or affine? What can be said
about the maximum shear stress plane position with time for loading 1 and 2?
2°) For loading 1 ad 2, draw the MOHR circles at the time t’ where the stress values are
maximum. Give the expressions of the maximum shear stress.
3°) The material under investigation is a mild steel (type C35) whose fatigue limits under
purely reversed torsion Dto−1 and purely reversed tension Dtr−1 are known :
Dto = 170 MPa , Dtr = 240 MPa

a) Give the relations and calculate the coefficients of Dang Van criterion for this material.
b) Give the mesocopic resolved shear stress in the elastic shakedown state and the
hydrostatic stress for loading 1 and 2. Draw the endurance line and the two loading paths
1 and 2 in the plane of the endurance criterion.
4°) For each load conditions, calculate the safety coefficient as a normalised distance of the
critical points (of the loading path) from the endurance line. What is the critical zone to
redesign ?
5°) In this critical zone, give the stress amplitudes that lead to no crack initiation assuming
that the proportionality coefficients between the stresses 11, 22 et 12 remain the same
as previously.
