Review Scene 4, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark

I think that the supernatural apparition of the ghost of King Hamlet on a cold,

misty night indicates that something is wrong in Denmark. The grandiose, mysterious

phantom emerges from the dark intermittently; therefore, I believe that he is trying to

reach or talk to someone. Maybe he is angry with the transfer of power in Denmark. Of

the four characters in Scene 1, I empathized with Horatio the most. He seems to be the

most outgoing and defying of the four and helps set the plot of the play by speaking to the

ghost, which foreshadows the ominous plot of the play. In Elizabethan theatre, the

superstitious characters were not to speak to ghosts for they brought bad fortune. I

believe that since ghosts are used in horror movies as scary creatures, King Hamlet’s

ghost functions as a kind of foreshadowing that implies tragedy.
