Biology 108 Final Project worth 5%

Due date:
At the end of regularly scheduled lab the week of March 29th, 2021

Description:
This is an oral presentation that you may either present live to your Lab Instructor or submit a video
following the instructions below. The video could be from your phone, a webcam, or any other recording
device but will need to be viewable by your Lab Instructor and you personally do not need to be in the
video (you may provide an audio recording with your visual aides).

Your goal in this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of evolution within a phylogenetic
group. We are suggesting that you look at a phylum covered in your textbook and we list some
suggestions further down, but you are welcome to choose another group that you are interested in
(another phylum, order, or class of organisms). Your presentation will be scored using the attached rubric.

Content: you will be providing the classification of a group relative to the Domain, Supergroup, and
Kingdom (all that apply). You should discuss major group evolutionary traits, how this may have
translated into environments where the group is successful and if there are any phylogenetic constraints1
that apply to the group. You should be careful in discussing these topics to avoid common
misconceptions about adaptation (as described in Wormald (2017) and posted in this folder).

Time length: minimum of 3 minutes, maximum of 5 minutes (consider that a general guideline is 1
minute per slide, so we are expecting a maximum of ~ 8 slides depending on how fast you talk).

Format: you should have visual aids (such as pictures, figures, and /or tables) and provide in-text
references for your main points. You will need to use at least one scientific source2 for your presentation;
an excellent grade may require more than one. You are encouraged to use your textbook for most of the
information. Please see the How to Cite document in this folder; this is the format you are required to use.

Video format and video uploading: if your recording is not in the listed format or you do not want to
follow the suggestions below you may send a link to a private Youtube video.

1
defined here as any result or component of the phylogenetic history of a lineage that prevents an anticipated course
of evolution in that lineage.
2
A scientific source for our purposes is one that has in-text citations similar to the lab manual - but the lab manual
or previous version do not count as a scientific source for this assignment.
