Read all instructions before beginning. This is an “open book / take home”assignment . You
may refer to any course materials for writing responses to the prompts, including: assigned
readings, lecture notes, You must cite all sources consistently (MLA) including a full
bibliography. Include your name and student number, and the name of your TA on your test
response. You have until 1159 pm on Monday, 12 December, 2022, to submit your responses

PART I: Short answers.


Choose three of the four pairs of concepts below. In one integrated paragraph of
approximately 300 words, clearly define both terms, explain how they relate to each other
and to policing, and illustrate your explanation with specific examples from course
materials. Include the corresponding numbers (1-4). There may be some overlap or a bit of
cross-referencing between some of the word pairs; but each of your short answers must be
substantively different, and must highlight the most important components of the different
pairs. Each answer is worth up to 20 points for a total of up to 60 points.

Part II: Choose one of the two essay prompts below. Write an essay of approximately
800-1000 words in which you clearly define all terms (both those provided in the prompt,
and any additional terms you may wish to use in your answer), provide a clear thesis
related to the prompt, and support your thesis with evidence using two or more specific
examples from course materials. When you type up your response, be sure to use the
corresponding number (1 or 2). Make sure that your answer is presented in concise, well-
written paragraphs, and be sure to address all parts of the prompt. Worth up to 40 points.

1. Public policing has emerged as a global form of governance over several hundreds of years,
and today exhibits both similarities and differences across “North” and “South” world regions
that belie simplistic stereotypes. Explain, contextualize, and illustrate using key concepts and at
least two specific examples from course materials.

2. Policing has long been a partly (or even mostly) privatized social institution that has taken
different forms across time and space, and has incited heated debates regarding equity, efficiency,
oversight, and accountability. Explain, contextualize, and illustrate using key concepts at least
two specific examples from course materials.
