1 Safety precautions

1 Safety precautions
When connecting, please note:
Always connect protective earth.
This is normally done via the
cable for the mains supply but can
also be done via the ground terminal on
the rear panel of Freja 300.

Always use safety connecting leads.

High voltage/current on input/output

terminals.

Warning:
Do not apply voltage to the outputs.

Do not attempt to service the Freja 300

yourself as opening or removing covers
may expose you to dangerous voltage. If
you attempt to service the FREJA 300
yourself the warranty is no longer valid.

Do not use any accessories that are not

intended for use together with the
FREJA 300.

Important:
Refer all servicing to qualified
service personnel.

Unplug the FREJA 300 from the mains

supply when it is left unattended or not
in use.

Before cleaning, unplug the

FREJA 300 from the mains supply. Use
a damp cloth for cleaning. Do not use
liquid or aerosol cleaners.

If you need to return your FREJA 300,

please use either the original crate or
one of equivalent strength.

Local Mode (version How to navigate in
R04R and later) Local mode
In the Local mode, you do not need a personal
computer to perform the control functions. When
Freja 300 is put in the Local mode, you can thus
control generation without using a personal compu-
ter.

Use the buttons below the display to navigate in the

menu tree. The text on the display above the buttons (1-4)
describes the actual function of each button.

You can run three instruments in Local mode If you press you go to a higher level
in the menu tree.

between the states. Above button you can read Start. If
you press it you will start to generate
the values you have set on this page.
RX (I)
The RX (I) instrument is designed for testing The button is used to toggle be-
distance relays in the RX plane. It uses a fixed
current and the built-in computer calculates the tween SET (Set values) and MEAS
voltage and phase angles for each generator. (Show measuring values). More about
this button in section ”Read the meas-
ured values”.
RX (%Z)
There is no any text above button ,
The RX (%Z) instrument is also used for testing
distance relays, but here you define the line with the but by pressing this you always go to

just testing in a few points along the line. This test
is good for routine testing.

Excel file GAIN FACTORS.XLS for easy
calculation of the gain factors.

Now these values shall be inserted into FREJA 300.

1. Go to the “MAIN” page
2. Go to the “SYSTEM” page
3. Go to “SETUP”
4. Select “ROGOW” with the dial
5. Select “TYPE U” with the dial (if it is not

6. Set “MAX OUTPUT AMPL.” To the value you
have for “U set max”, in the Example it was

7. Set “GAIN”, in the example it was 16.667
8. Set “Ph.comp” if necessary
9. Select “TYPE I”
10. Set “MAX OUTPUT AMPL.” to the value you
have for “I set max”, in the example it was
1 A. But since we want also to be able to
set a bit higher current we set max to 2A
(the “I gain” will remain the same).

Note! See the value you set in FREJA´s display

as X*primary values.
Example: If you have a 400 A to 150 mV
Rogowski transformer and want to simu-
late 800 A you shall set FREJA to 2 A

11. Set “GAIN”, in the Example it was 3.333

12. Set “Ph.comp” if necessary (normally 90
degrees for I)
13. Press “ESC”
14. Press “CONNECT”
15. Select “ROGOW” on I generators (page 1)
and/or U generators (page2). This means it
is possible to have Rogowski on all 6

tors as normal, e.g. as 3 normal voltage
and 3 Rogowski current.
16. Press “ESC”
17. Now connect the cable to “EXT.” on the
back panel of FREJA. FREJA is now ready to
be used as normal. The difference is that to

Network Model
You should start by selecting a network Network model 3PZSTD1A
model since the protective relay system
will normally be set for ohms per
phase, but Freja must generate ohms
per loop in order to supply the system
correctly. This means that a factor of 2
must be included (for 2-phase faults),
either by generating half the current or
double the voltage.

Network model 3PZSTD2A

In network model 3PZSTD1A, a factor of 2 is

already included in the current. Consequently only
half the current set on the screen will be generated.

In network model 3PZSTD2A, a factor of 2 is

included in the voltage. Consequently, twice as
much voltage as that set on the screen will be
generated.

This network model is useful when you want to

generate high impedances in situations where it is
difficult to provide high enough voltage.

Note! However, if you want to test a protective

relay system equipped with overcurrent
starting, you MUST select 3PZSTD2A.

Current outputs 4) • On-line measurement of the current and voltage out-
Range put, presented on the built-in display.
• Calibration check when the temperature is changed.
3-phase AC 3 x 15 A
5) Full calibration can be conducted at any time using
1-phase AC 1 x 45 A the FREJA calibration box. This means you do not
DC (L-N) 15 A need to send away FREJA for calibration. Only the
Power calibration box needs to be sent for calibration once
3-phase AC 3 x 87 VA per year.
1-phase AC
5)
1 x 250 VA • Connection to IBM compatible PC (minimum Pentium
DC (L-N) 3 x 87 W II 266 MHz, 32 Mb RAM, Win 95/98/2000, NT 4.0)
via the serial port. The FREJA has a built-in switch
Resolution SW 1 mA
that enables you to switch communication back and
HW 0.65 mA
forth between the PC and your relay.
Inaccuracy3) (guaranteed) ±0.01% of range + 0.3% of
reading 1) 50 or 60 Hz AC + harmonics only.
Distortion (THD+N)2) 0.1% typical (0.2% max) 2) THD+N: Values at 50/60 Hz, at max amplitude, 50% power and
resistive load. Measurement bandwidth 22 Hz – 22 kHz.
3) For sinusoidal signals at 50/60 Hz.
4) For higher current or output power you can use amplifier CA3.
5) Parallel connection.

Generators, general
Frequency range
Continuous signals DC – 2000 Hz
Transient signals DC – 3.5 kHz
Frequency resolution 1 mHz
Frequency inaccuracy 0.01%
Phase angle range 0 – 360°
Phase resolution 0.1°
Phase inaccuracy4) ±0.1°
Connection (Amplifier outputs)
4 mm stackable safety plugs
or 8-pin amplifier multiconnector
All seven generators are continuously and independently
adjustable in amplitude and phase. No switching of range is
necessary. All current and voltage outputs are fully overload-
and short-circuit-proof and protected against external high
voltage transient signals and overtemperature.
Note! To allow continuous generation of high DC current
(12 - 15 A), a minimum load impedance of 0.2 Ohm is
required. For lower load impedances, e.g. short-circuit,
the time is limited to 1 minute.

DC auxiliary voltage output

Abbreviation list
”.” Indication that test was passed
”1st” First state, normally Prefault
”2nd” Second state, normally Fault
BI Binary Input
Binary Goal Goal for Binary Input. Timer stops
when BI = Binary Goal
BO Binary Output
DUT Device Under Test = Relay
Prefault Generated values before the fault
Ramp There are two different types of
Ramp. In General the Ramp extends
continuously from 1st to 2nd. But in
Distance RX-Ramp the rampsare not
continuous. These ramps jump back
to Prefault. Otherwise it would be
impossible to test distance relays
without turning of the time zones.
