Statement of Purpose

My name is Amna Maqsood. This statement is to describe myself as student who is willing to study APPLIED
LINGUISTICS AND TESOL MA at University of Portsmouth. I successfully completed Matriculation
examination in 2009. After that I did my Intermediate in 2011 and I did my BA in 2013 from University of the
Punjab. In 2014 I completed my B.ED from Allama Iqbal Open University and in 2020 in did my Masters degree in
Early Childhood Education. I worked in a school as a senior teacher from 2014 to 2018 in Punjab Lyceum School
and now I wish to continue my education further in APPLIED LINGUISTICS AND TESOL MA at University of
Portsmouth. So I can progress and achieve more in the professional field.

Going to university within the UK is abundant thanks to enlarging my knowledge, meeting new people,
experiencing a new culture, and luxuriating in new experiences. I’ll get support from the university and an
opportunity to grasp a good student regime. There's a huge range of societies, moreover as an assorted social life on
offer. The United Kingdom is made-up of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. Each country has
different regions, each contributing large cosmopolitan cities, towns, and countryside villages. The United Kingdom
has a diverse society, with a rich diversity of cultures, languages, and faiths, varied cuisine, strong transport links,
and international sporting championships. The UK is the perfect place for me as it has a multicultural society, with a
rich diversity of cultures, languages with a strong transport link which is a plus point for me to widen my friend
circle, and to meet some proficient minds to amplify my knowledge.

I prefer to study at the University of Portsmouth because it has very well-established and distinguished faculties.
Every department has excellent laboratory facilities and has high-rated supervisors who have prestigious research
experience and exposure. Moreover, the standard of research work here is extremely lofty. Also, it’s located within
the bright and culturally diverse city of London. Hence, these factors have helped me to fortify my decision in
pursuing graduate studies here.

Portsmouth is the UK's only island city and its pretty beaches, gritty street art, and naval history make it a
memorable place to live and study. There are a lot of great things that can be said about the University of
Portsmouth. Students love studying there – with the university ranking in the top 30 in the country for student
satisfaction and many of the courses scoring 100% for satisfaction. The University of Portsmouth is one of 42 UK
universities that were awarded Gold in the most recent Teaching Excellence Framework, a reflection of the high
quality of teaching at the University. Its success depends on the capabilities and drive of the community of staff.

If I teach English to speakers of other languages and want to continue my personal and professional development,
enhance my abilities and become an expert in my field. In this MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL degree course,
I’ll take my qualifications to Master’s level whether I choose to study full-time, or part-time via distance learning
and develop my expertise in fields that interest me the most. I'll enhance my teaching skills too, so when I graduate,
I'll be ready to take the next ambitious strides in my career.

This degree will provide me with the critical understanding of key issues and debates in many areas of Applied
Linguistics and of how these relate to English Language Teaching. This course is a body of knowledge that will
enhance my ability to undertake language teaching at a range of levels in different cultural and institutional contexts.
I will have the ability to reflect, analyze and critically evaluate language teaching and learning concepts and
theories, and to understand and examine the assumptions underlying different classroom practices.

It will help me gain the skills to undertake effective practitioner research in my specific area of interest.

In the end, I would like to conclude all in a few words that the next step of my life or the next few years of my life
will be crucial in the sense that after getting an APPLIED LINGUISTICS AND TESOL MA. So after my degree,
I will come back to Pakistan for seeking a better future and having experience of learning and interacting with
people from all around the world will give me the chance to establish myself in a better work environment. After
completion of my degree in the UK, I will return to my home country and I will find a really good job which will be
relevant to my line of work.
