Figures: percentages & fractions

Percentages

When expressing percentages, we don't normally use "the":

20% - Twenty percent  (NOT The twenty percent)

57% - Fifty-seven percent

82% - Eighty-two percent

Fractions

When expressing fractions, the general rule is to read the first number as a cardinal
number, and the second number as an ordinal number:

3/8 - Three eighths

6/7 - Six sevenths

7/9 - Seven ninths

2/3 - Two thirds

When the first figure is “1", we can use the article “a” instead of the number “one”. The
second number is singular:

1/3 : A third / One third

1/7 : A seventh / One seventh

A half / a quarter: The following two fractions are irregular:

1/2 : A half (NOT A second)

1/4 : A quarter (NOT A fourth)
