Uses of 'it'

Below are some common uses of the word "it":

Cleft sentences (for emphasis):

It was Cliff who gave it to us. (Cliff gave it to us. Not Bill or Jane.)

It’s the constant rain that I can’t stand. (It's the worst thing.)

It was his dog that died. (Not his cat.)

To refer to animals or babies, or when the sex is unknown:

Is it a boy or a girl?

That's a lovely dog. What's its name?

On the telephone:

Who is it? It’s Joe.

To talk about time, date, weather, distance

It's six o'clock.

It's the 3rd May.

It's raining.

It's about 30 kilometres from here.

With adjectives

It's easy to see why you like her so much.

It would be better to tell him the truth.

It’s annoying when you can't find your keys.

With certain verbs

It strikes me that...

It appears/seems/looks easy.
It depends on you.

It takes two hours to get there.

It costs 12 euros.

Other phrases

It’s time to leave.
