Reflection:

Speculate about why images might be important in non-literature cultures? Why might be one
concern about images used in religious rituals?

Images are important especially to non-literature culture it is because not everything can
be understood by anyone through words or letters especially to people who don’t know how to
read and write. For centuries, words have been considered to measure someone’s intellect. A
non-literature society that has no unified type of communication, especially during the ancient
and classical times, used visual art to convey messages to people. Examples cave painting,
Egyptian carvings, and even classical painting such as “the last supper” by Leonardo Da Vinci
and ceiling of the Sistine chapel by Michel Angelo where events on the bible were presented.
With representing these such religious rituals, respect to the writing is what an artist should be
concerned about, the paintings should accurately depict the story.
