B.V.Doshi noted for his contributions to the evolution


of architectural discourse in India. Balkrishna
Vithaldas Doshi also considered an important figure
of Indian architecture.

In 2018, Balkrishna Doshi became the first Indian architect to receive the most
prestigious prizes in architecture, “Pritzker Architecture Prize Award”. B V Doshi also
awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

B.V.Doshi completed more than 100 buildings and housing projects, many of which
were public institutions based in India: art centres, schools, libraries, and low-cost
housing.

Early life & Childhood


Balkrishna Doshi (B.V. Doshi) was born on August 26, 1927 in Pune, Maharashtra, India.
Doshi injured at the age of 11 in a fire accident and has walked with a slight limp ever
since.
His grandfather owned a furniture workshop. He became interested in architecture. He
initially believed he would take up that profession.

Education and Career


In 1947,He studied at the Sir J. J. School of Architecture in Mumbai. In 1950, he went to
London. In Europe, he met Le Corbusier, one of the pioneers of modern architecture.

Le Corbusier was a Swiss-French architect, designer, and urban planner. He worked


closely in the famed architect’s studio in Paris with Le Corbusier on the latter’s projects in
Paris between 1950 and 1954.

In 1954, he returned to India to oversee some of Le Corbusier’s projects in Ahmedabad,


which included the Shodhan Villa,Sarabhai Villa, and Mill Owners’ Association Building.
Sangath Architecture – Vastu Shilpa
In 1980, Balkrishna Doshi designed his studio, Sangath – Vāstu Shilpā (environmental
design); and some of his most important housing projects.

Later, Vāstu Shilpā renamed Vastu Shilpa Consultants. The architecture consultancy firm
worked on more than 100 buildings and housing projects throughout India.

Design Philosophies
Doshi describes architecture as an extension of the body, and his ability to
attentively address function while regarding climate, landscape, and urbanization is
demonstrated through his choice of materials, overlapping spaces, and utilization of
natural and harmonizing elements.

According to Doshi Architecture of a building is conceived not as a container of


specific activities but as a place to be inhabited, as a place to facilitate the course of
human environment

Famous constructions by Doshi


1950

At Le Corbusier's office Doshi first


works on the designs for the High
Court and Governor's Palace in
Chandigarh and, later, the Mill
Owners' Association building and
Shodhan House in Ahmedabad,
Gujarat, among other projects.

1956

Doshi opened his own practice in


Ahmedabad and called it
Vastu-Shilpa (in Sanskrit, “Vastu”
describes the total environment
around us; “Shilpa” means to design).
