Answer the following questions. Answers must have at least five (5) sentences.

1. How are you going to maximize the standard method of measurement for the quantification of
construction works?

The Standard Method of Measurement (SMM) is a documentation of rules and guidelines

that provides a uniform basis for the measurement of construction works. Everything that Quantity
Surveyors must need to know and consider in the quantification of works is written in the SMM.
However, despite the accuracy it delivers to a construction project, SMM is still ineffective if not
correctly utilized.

To maximize the SMM for the quantification of construction works, one must need to learn
first how to properly use the tabulated rules. This is located in Chapter 2 of the Philippine Standard
Method of Measurement (PSMM), 7th edition 2014. But since there are several SMM available in
the industry, the use of tabulated rules may be in a different section. Nevertheless, understanding
this is essential as this will prevent most likely occurring errors such as overlooked rules and
underestimate measurement, and allow Quantity Surveyor to effectively employ the SMM for the
quantification of works.

2. Being a civil engineering student, what is the importance of having background knowledge
about the standard method of measurement?

From other perspectives, the Standard Method of Measurement seems to be a basic

knowledge to learn compared to NBCP and NSCP. Some will think it only deals with
‘measurement’ and ‘units’ that common people can do. But then, I believe that understanding
SMM has the same degree of importance as the NBCP and NSCP.

Having background knowledge about SMM prepares us for the real world of the construction
industry where complexity and ambiguity are not inevitable. As we take a step in our future
profession as Quantity Surveyors, this can ensure that we can provide quality work, save every
cost of the construction, and execute the good performance that the industry requires. This will
also serve as our universal communication with partner companies we are going to deal with. Thus,
leading to a successful quantity take-off and cost-effective projects.
3. Do you think there is still a need for improvement in the standard method of measurement we
are using in civil engineering? Why?

One of the promising characteristics of good Quantity Surveying is being adaptive. If a QS

is adaptive, I believe that the tools they utilized must be adaptive as well.

Although the Standard Method of Measurement already provides comprehensive

information about the quantification of construction works, the format itself still gives confusion
to users –especially if they are not specialized in that field. It is important that regardless of
specialization, they would still be able to understand how the SMM works. Therefore, the quest
for simplification and adaptability in the tabulated rules is still present. With all these, I believe
that improvements are still necessary for the standard method of measurement we are using in civil
engineering.
