⇒ “1.4.1 General Information”, page 33
⇒ “1.4.2 Multifunction Steering Wheel from 12.01, Performing
OBD Functions with VAS 5051”, page 33

1.4.1 General Information

The multifunction steering wheel makes it possible to operate the
most important functions of the radio and the cruise control from
the steering wheel.
The multifunction steering wheel includes the following compo‐
nents:
♦ The operating unit in the steering wheel with two key pads.
Key pads with integrated electronics are mounted on the left
and right sides of the steering wheel.
♦ Multifunction steering wheel control module.
Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar
with the functions and operation specifics of the applicable stand‐
ard or optional radio system. Always read the vehicle/radio own‐
er's manual and review all radio, tape player, CD changer and
cruise control functions as they pertain to the multifunction steer‐
ing wheel.
The multifunction steering wheel control module has On Board
Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities.
If malfunctions occur in monitored components, Diagnostic Trou‐
ble Codes (DTC) will be stored in memory together with an
indication of malfunction type. A maximum of 4 DTC's can be
stored simultaneously.
Sporadic malfunctions (indicated in the readout by “SP”) are au‐
tomatically cancelled if not repeated in the next 50 engine starts.
Before performing any troubleshooting or inspection, always be‐
gin by checking for DTC's using the On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
program. DTC's stored in memory are retrieved/checked with Ve‐
hicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System -VAS5051- .
Refer to
⇒ “1.4.2 Multifunction Steering Wheel from 12.01, Performing
OBD Functions with VAS 5051”, page 33 .

12.01, Performing OBD Functions with
VAS 5051
OBD program text/data generated by the multifunction steering
wheel control module in vehicles from 12.01 production may not
be recognized by Scan Tools -VAG1551/1552- (ST) with the lat‐
est program card. For example: scan tool display shows “text
799”, “01529 /references” or similar.
