Abstract:

Lung Cancer is one of the dreadful diseases that is bothering human life for many years caused by
various reasons such as smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption, and heredity. Lung Cancer cure is
possible, only if it is detected at an early stage. Because of the advancement in science and medical
imaging, there are various scans like CT (Computed Tomography), PET( Positron Emission
Tomography) scanning, and other scanning methods that are used to detect lung cancer. But the
accuracy given by CT scan is less. Further CT scan gives false-positive rate, uses ionizing radiation
which kills also the internal structure of living cells and cost is more. PET scan also has drawbacks like
PET scan does not detect larger pulmonary mass lesions, small pulmonary nodules. More accuracy
can be obtained if machine learning and deep learning algorithms like CNN are applied. CNN is an
algorithm in Deep Learning. CNN can take images, assign importance to different objects in the
image and it can differentiate one image from another. In this review, the factors that causes lung
cancer and how Machine Learning algorithms can be used are discussed. This paper also draws
special attention to strengths and weaknesses of the algorithms.
