Solving Word Problems Involving

Quadratic Function
Objectives:

• solve geometrical problems involving quadratic

functions;
• solve number problems involving quadratic
functions;
• solve maximizing profit problems involving
quadratic functions;
• solve free falling objects problems involving
quadratic functions
(h, k)
h = the value needed to get the
maximum/minimum value
k = maximum/minimum value
Steps in Solving Word Problems:
1. Read the problem carefully and analyze the
given facts.
2. Determine the unknown quantity or quantities.
3. Let the unknown quantities expressed in terms
of variables
4. Translate the problem into equation by using the
statements in constructing
the algebraic equation.
5. Solve for the unknown quantity or quantities
A Quadratic function can be applied in
business/industry to determine the maximum profit, the
break –even situation and the like.
Suppose x denotes the number of units a company plans
to produce or sell. The revenue function R(x) defined as
R(x) = (price per unit) x (number of units produced
or sold).
A garment store sells about 40 t-shirts per week at a
price of Php 100 each. For Php 10 decrease in price,
the sales lady found out that 5 more t-shirts per week
were sold. Write a quadratic function in
standard form that models the revenue from t-shirt
sales. What price produces the maximum revenue?
A ball is thrown from the top of a 144-foot
building. The ball follows a trajectory. The height H
reached by the ball after t seconds is given by the
quadratic function 𝑯 𝒕 = 𝟔𝟒𝒕 − 𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 .

a. How high did the ball reach?

b. How long did it take to reach that height?
c. Where was the ball after 5 seconds?
d. How long did it take for the ball to hit the
ground?
How high did the ball reach?
We are looking for the maximum height.
Find the value of k since k is the maximum/minimum
value.
Given Function: 𝑯 𝒕 = 𝟔𝟒𝒕 − 𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 .
Therefore, the maximum
𝟐
𝑯 𝒕 = −𝟏𝟔𝒕 + 𝟔𝟒𝒕 height that the ball reached
a = - 16 b = 64 c= 0 is 64 ft from the top of the
𝟒𝐚𝐜 − 𝐛𝟐 building.

𝟒(−𝟏𝟔) −𝟔𝟒
b. How long did it take to reach that
height?

Remember that h is the value needed to get

the maximum/minimum value (k).
We will solve for the time needed to reach
that maximum height which is 64 ft from the
building. Hence, we will solve for h.
Given Function: 𝑯 𝒕 = 𝟔𝟒𝒕 − 𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 .
𝟐
𝑯 𝒕 = −𝟏𝟔𝒕 + 𝟔𝟒𝒕
a = - 16 b = 64 c = 0
−𝒃 −𝟔𝟒
𝒉= = =𝟐

Therefore, it will take 2 seconds for the ball

to reach its maximum height.
c. Where was the ball after 5 seconds?
t=5
Given Function: 𝑯 𝒕 = 𝟔𝟒𝒕 − 𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 .
𝑯 𝒕 = −𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 + 𝟔𝟒𝒕
𝑯 𝟓 = −𝟏𝟔 𝟓 𝟐 + 𝟔𝟒(𝟓)
𝑯 𝟓 = −𝟏𝟔 𝟐𝟓 + 𝟑𝟐𝟎
𝑯 𝟓 = −𝟒𝟎𝟎 + 𝟑𝟐𝟎 = −𝟖𝟎
Therefore, after 5 seconds the ball is at 80 ft below from the
top of the building.
d. How long did it take for the ball to hit the ground?

H (t) = - 144 ft
Given Function: 𝑯 𝒕 = 𝟔𝟒𝒕 − 𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 .
𝑯 𝒕 = −𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 + 𝟔𝟒𝒕
− 𝟏𝟒𝟒 = −𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 + 𝟔𝟒𝒕
𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 − 𝟔𝟒𝒕 − 𝟏𝟒𝟒 = 𝟎
𝒕𝟐 − 𝟒𝒕 − 𝟗 = 𝟎
Since we are finding for time, we have to solve
for t.
𝒕𝟐 − 𝟒𝒕 − 𝟗 = 𝟎
