7 Continents and 7 Wonders

Materials: ‘Hunting Wonders’ printable (provided at the printable section).

Separated by seas or oceans, every piece of land on earth is part of a continent. For the first part of the day,
the students are going to embark on an amazing journey that will take them across the world, to every
corner of the earth where they'll learn all about giant land masses that make up our home planet –
CONTINENTS! They will also discover the wonders and marvels in each of them. Towards the end of the
session, the students will be invited to a game of ‘Hunting Wonders’ to reinforce their knowledge. Get ready
for a great world tour!

‘Hunting Wonders’ game: Before the game starts, parents need to cut and place the Wonders of the World
picture cards in 4 directions (North, South, West, East) from your child’s seating. Your child must then find
them with the help of teacher’s given directions and the DIY Compass.

Materials: Paper plate, Glue, scissors, brass fastener/ split pin/pipe cleaner, crayon, Compass Rose
printable (*optional – provided as an alternative to drawing).

Compass skills are the next step up when it comes to maps and wayfinding. Teaching compass skills to
children is a great way to cultivate their abstract reasoning and ability to visualize during problem solving.
While a compass helps us figure out in what direction we are going, a compass rose is a feature on a map
that tells us what direction to go to find certain places on the map.  To help our aspiring geographers to learn
about the four cardinal directions on the compass rose (North, South, West, and East), we are going to
create a DIY Compass for a learning fun!

Mapping Skill
Materials: Paper, pencil colours/crayons.

Given the technology we have, is mapping skill a skill we no longer need to learn?
Absolutely not. When children learn how to create and use maps, they are doing more than just learning
how to get around. They are developing fundamental skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. When
children learn map skills, they are learning to visualize and interpret data. It is no longer just data and
numbers, but instead something they can interact with and utilize. By looking at a map drawing, they can see
where the river flows through a town, learn how to get to the mountains, and find the best route to the
grocery store.
On this last part of the session, students are given opportunities to practice with maps of familiar places, like
their city or neighbourhood.
